After ten year career in the software industry, he held positions at an investment firm and as a corporate development executive at a pioneering c r m software company. He likes to observe the evolution of software markets, including the impact of innovation. Don fornes, pleasure to welcome you to the show. Thanks, tony, glad to be here. Thank you, don. What are some symptoms that, eh, small and midsize non-profits current system, whether it’s software based or however it’s based aren’t, isn’t working very well. And a lot of the non profit organizations that we speak to our on the smaller end of the scale, and they’re managing things through excel spreadsheets, maybe they have ah, ah website that was coded by, you know, employer volunteers with few they’re using microsoft outlook and trying to find emails and information in there. There isn’t a professional infrastructure for managing their operations, and that can lead to what errors in in data, what other kinds of problems certainly errors on data but difficulty finding the information that they need inability to could manage an effective workflow and no what’s going on and making sure things are getting done, having insight into you know who are their, what, not just who is donating, but what what segment of constituent is donating and being able to discover things about their their organization if you’re using excel spreadsheets than there might be different versions of that floating around your office? Yeah, that’s, that’s one of the big issues with spreadsheets now excel is an outstanding tool and that’s why so many organizations use it but you do have that version control issue, and you have just a lot of opportunity. For errors in your formulas and things like that. So you get to a certain scale when spreadsheets won’t cut it anymore. Also in pulling out like donorsearch formacion you alluded to this, you know, you want to be ableto segment, right? So that you can target people with a specific a specific approach. Sure, you’ve got you’ve got constituents who are big donors, small donors, everything in between, you’ve got constituents or e-giving for different reasons. So you really do it want to develop a marketing strategy that that identifies your various segments, and and you want to work with them in each, each segment in a unique way that appeals to you to their motivations and just expect forces, right? Thank you, and just extracting data. I mean, you should be ableto query your your database system in lots of different, with lots of different variables. Yeah, there’s so many exciting things going on in terms of analytics these days that the ability to not just automate the transactions, that is, you know, that the donations or tracking contact information or interactions, but then to be able to go back and do discovery on that information or quickly. Generated report. That type of analysis is so valuable and it’s getting easier. But it’s not as easy if you don’t have a good infrastructure in place, capturing that data in the first place. Yeah, you can’t really be. You can’t be very sophisticated. Um, what are the different types of software that might be out there that we’re gonna be talking about helping people select? Well, you know what? The court, the nonprofit organization needs to account financially differently than a for-profit organization. So now there is fundez counting, which is critical infrastructure, but then in terms of really growing out business, getting beyond the administration, too, more strategic, how you’re going to raise money and activate your constituents, you’ve got a range of different applications, and so you’ve got donorsearch which will help you track who are your best donors or who could be your best donors, or maybe a more high volume campaign of how do you get a lot of small donations from a very broad set of targets? And then if it’s a membership based organization, you’ve got member management, not your providing some kind of value to that membership and trying to track who they are and who’s paid their dues and what you can do for them and what their interests are. You have case management where you have, um, let’s say you’re a client based organization where you have clients that you’re taking care of our helping, you’ve got volunteermatch management where you’re, you’ve got a large force of volunteers and you want to keep them organized, get the most out of that enthusiasm those are those are four examples of very specific applications. And, of course, the structure of the nonprofit organization will determine what they need. In that case, there are larger, broader, more sophisticated systems that integrate these capabilities. But whether or not you go to that level of technology investment, that’s, that’s. A really important question on organization, needs to ask itself. What about event planning? Sure, event planning is another application i didn’t name, but if you do a lot of events, you need to track registration, you need to track payments for those events and and all the tasks that come along with putting on a great event. So that’s, another application that could be part of ah abroad integrated sweet or could be purchased on a standalone basis on dh. Then, of course, for non-profits that get a lot of their revenue, or even just some of their revenue from from grants, there’s always grant administration and management too. There is on both sides of that relationship for the foundation organization that might be giving that grant, as well as the non-profit that’s receiving that grant so there’s there’s software to automate that as well, i think it’s, you know, moving to another topic, which is you know what you actually need thie organization needs too sit down and think about what are our real pain points why’re we where we falling short, so not just not just thinking in terms of ji that technology is very shiny and cool? I’d love to use that, but where are we experiencing the most pain? Right now is keeping track of who are. Donors are who might be a donor. Or is it really organizing our volunteers to get the most out of them? More, you know, is that we have a difficult time organizing and managing big prevent process. If you have an outstanding grand writer, and you’re only applying for a few grantspace year, maybe you don’t need to automate that. And as we’re on we, i know you have five different tips that we’re going to talk through. But and your got into one of them. Thank you. As you’re identifying what your real problem is, is it? Is it possible to? I would think it is. But i want to make sure to get a software solution that’s going to solve that problem, but then also have add on sort of modules that would do other things, as the organization’s needs. Strange. Sure, so there’s, there are a range of solutions starting from what we refer to his best of breed, so let’s say an application that just does donorsearch midge mint and they do that very well, and they have a lot of features for doner management. They go deep into that functionality, and then they’re on the other end of the scale are integrated systems that do donorsearch management, member management, case management, event management, the whole range of applications we call that an integrated suite and, you know, in theory, maybe there are broader than they are deep, although in some cases they’re both broad and deep. Um so you you have to figure out where you want to fall on that scale. Obviously the the best of breed solution khun target a specific pain point you’re having it can typically be implemented mohr quickly you have fewer people using it, fewer people involved in the implementation and you just go and you tackle that problem with that specific, best to breed solution. When you’re talking about integrated system, you’re getting the whole organization mobilized. Teo moved to this new system you’re thinking about how do your various departments work together. The folks that are working with donors, the folks that are working with volunteers, folks, they’re working with clients, and they’re all moving to this new system. It can be somewhat of a big bang approach and requires a lot more change management, and there may be benefits down the road to have him, everyone working off one seamless infrastructure sharing data and prostheses. But getting there is a big investment and the big challenge for the organization. We have to take a break for a couple minutes done, and when we come back, we’ll keep talking a little about the what we’re on now. Dot com done so well, i’m talking about this implementation. It is possible than tio by these things in modules. Just just what you need immediately. And then there are systems where you can add additional modules. Is that true? I would say that that can’t be true. The modularity of the system really depends on how it was architected buy the software company. So there are some companies that do a very good job of designing their software into modules that can be turned on or off. So that you could say, deploy four of ten modules and then turn more on as ugo. But you can’t take for granted that every system is going to be architected in such a way that makes that easy. Some learn some art and that’s something really begin to is you evaluate the software. Okay. All right. So let’s, let’s, get into your five tips. You you really started with one. You introduced one the type of problem that you’re trying to solve and your advice there really sounds like is to start with the problem, not the cool technology. You know. I like to say, don’t be romanced by the technology, especially now that we’re into this cloud era and there’s a lot of advances being made and user interface, and and how it looks, who feels this software is just really attractive and great stuff. But make sure you’ve got a need for it. Don’t just go buying technology because it looks full, or because one one person in the organization, maybe tech savvy. There may be an early adopter, but then the rest of the team are, you know, luddite, and we’ll find in the same way that person did. You can. You can get yourself in some trouble where you’ve invested in great technology, but you’re not using it. And i think related to that is that you want to get what’s practical for your office. Sure. So there are there are systems that are fairly lightweight and do just the basics and sometimes that’s all you need sometimes you don’t need toe over altum e and other times you have a larger, more sophisticated organization, or one particular department is fairly sophisticated. And you really want some advanced technologies. He’s got to think about what is what is right for your organization and your your department. How do you avoid being romanced? Are seduced by the bells and whistles. That really cool? Um oh, this one. You know, this one does that to we could we could use that to and o it has this other thing. We could use that also. How do you keep your feet on the ground? I think it starts. We’re staying ok. We’re talking about a technology purchase here, but let’s, put technology aside for a while. Let’s. Sit down and say, what are our biggest challenges? Where are we? At least efficient. Where do we spend the most amount of time creating the least amount of value? Is it that we have? Everyone has their own set of contacts, you know, maybe each pitch person who’s working with. Donors has their own list of of contacts. It’s not shared. And someone leaves in those contacts. Go with, um for example. Okay, now you want to look for some kind of a donor management system that will unify all those contact to be shared even if they are assigned to different individuals. So you you want to think about where your biggest pain points are and prioritize what problems you want to solve in what order i like to say start small, think big, grow quickly. So, you know, start small. Okay? What? What problems are we going to try himself keeping it in the context of thinking big? Eventually we want to solve almost all of these problems and then moved from their issue. You have success. So i think, really just having a business discussion about the processes and workflows and what’s working and what’s not, and then once you say, ok, this is what we’re going to stall them. This is how we’re going to solve it. Then you go out and you start evaluating the technology and you stay in control of that sales process rather than letting a sales person from the software company. Show off bells and whistles that make them most attractive. You know, you say that’s, great that’s, interesting will take that into consideration, but you always come backto. What are the core problems we’re trying to solve? And how does that technology solve those problems? You talked about fundacao n’t ing software earlier. What air cem? Some basics around around fundez counting. And what sort of problems might an organization have if if they’re not doing their accounting efficiently? Sure, i think with with the counting it’s it’s important to get the right infrastructure and processes and controls in place, i said, you need to be automating a process that is it’s. That accounting process is mission critical and has to have very strict controls. You don’t want to ever get into a situation where funds are being misappropriated are or you’re not sure how much cash flow you have going through the organization, so that is an area where you’ve got to get the right system in place. And yet, at the same time, it can be very constraining, because in accounting system has to be rigid and enforced controls. You need to make sure that this software that you’re buying handles the process is the way you want to handle them, or that you are willing to adapt to how that software handles those processes. S so we may have to adapt to what the software requires us to do. Yeah, so some software is more flexible than others in accounting, often it’s a little more rigid compared to, say, a constituent relationship management system. Because, you know, we do have, you know, accounting principles that are standardized that we have to follow, so you may have to. You have to do things the way that software is built to do it. I see in ah, a lot of small shops. It seems like very routine things, like maybe checks being received or accounts payable, being ah, being received or sorry, paid always seem to seem, even though their routine, they seem like each time it’s the first time it’s ever been done. I hope that’s, not the case, for, for all organised. I think some are more efficient than others. I think it comes down to you know, what is the attitude around payables receivables? And how quickly are you going to do it and who’s doing it? So i think that getting the right software in places key there, there are so many great duitz technologies right now, such as a ch payments, you bring a payables receivables in our own organization, we’re doing more and more th which is essentially a wire transfer, but no more sent paper checks, but actually just sending the money elektronik, lee and the more modern systems are built to be able to do those kind of transactions. And i’m glad i’m glad you explained what a ch is. Because on this show, i have jargon jail, but you kept yourself out. You kept yourself out of george in jail by quickly saying, basically a ch iso wire transfer. I think it stands for automated clearing house. Do you know? Is that right? That sounds good. Okay, so we’ll take that. Okay? Yeah. Yeah. And i just meant that, uh, i guess i was going back to symptomology a little bit. You know, when i said routine things seemed to i get treated as if there is the first time every time, even though it’s it’s done, you know, it doesn’t times a month or something it always seems to be a difficult task. So andi, i see. Sorry, go ahead, you’ve got organizations for maybe you have a volunteer bookkeeper, who’s coming in once a week or twice a month or something, and maybe they’re using an application that isn’t designed for fund accounting on dh. Maybe that particular person is, ah fine bookkeeper, but not very tech savvy and so that’s, where you can get into those situations where things are just very slow moving and and no one can really tell whether the check has been cut or not, or received or not. And i think that is symptomatic of the level of sophistication of the organization or they thought, function in the organization. Let’s, go back to your to your tips for, for finding navigating your way through the right software. What, what what’s. Next on that you recommend. Well, we’ve talked about not being romanced by the technology we’ve talked about some of the different applications, and identifying the problem first and then matching the technology is the solution. I think another interesting thing is its funding technology it’s an interesting area, because there are plenty of people out there who who loved technology, who loved sponsoring technology who love rolling up their sleeves. Of course, there are plenty who don’t, but organizations can identify those constituents who can be very useful as a technology resource. So in technology, there are plenty of people who been very successful financially, so you may find donors who have a background in technology who get excited about funding some kind of technology, purchase and implementation, and at the same time, they can roll up their sleeves and help with advising on selecting that technology, implementing that technology. Then there are folks who fit that description that maybe don’t have the financial resources to contribute, but could contribute their time and skills. So technology is is an area where well, let’s, let’s, go back to that bookkeeper, you know, there may be bookkeepers who could volunteer toe do your accounting, but that probably isn’t the same level of passion relative to technology, where there’s some people that are very passionate about what technology can accomplish and would really the motivated to come in and help you either financially or by rolling up their sleeves. Uh, so i think you can be really creative as you think about technology. Maybe not just another thing that comes out of the operating budget. But could you do a special campaign around raising money to fund a technology project or forgetting time donated by folks that are tech savvy? Okay, excellent, yeah, and and as you two shut on this. Another. Another issue and that’s important, and a tip that you have is around the implementation and the training. Sure, so this is along the same theme i’ve been hitting on throughout this conversation, which is they’re really needs to be a process behind the technology, whether that process is something you seek to automate with the technology or process you switch to because that’s the process that technology automates by default, and so the people that are gonna adopt this technology and use it are really critical to its success and can also lead to its failure. So if you by technology and you don’t use it, we refer to that in the industry as sh elsewhere go that as we do surveys of technology users and buyers almost every time what floats to the top is one of the biggest challenges is adoption. How do you get everyone to start using it if you have your development folks using a donor management system, but they don’t like filling out all the fields, you know, maybe they need the email in the phone number. I just don’t want to take the time to put in that physical address. Ah, that may serve their needs, fine, but it’s not going to help the marketing group when they want to. Do that next direct mail campaign, right? Right. You can get a lot of dirty data and there you need to get those folks bought in early to get the right data and the system and clean data in the system. If they’ve always been more of a relationship person, they don’t want to use technology, maybe they do their work over in lunches or in events. You can have this whole system you’ve invested in, people are using it. So i’m i make a suggestion that may seem counterintuitive, which is get those people involved in leading the technology selection and implementation effort. Maybe they’re not the lead on the project, but they’re involved from the start so that they have a sense of ownership and buy-in and really get exposure to what the technology can do from the start. Well, they were probably gonna put one of your more tech savvy people in charge of the project. But you need to get those. Those late adopters are nanites into the process early so that they really you have an epiphany then come to believe in technology. We also need the leadership. It’s it’s gotta be it’s. Gotta be. Used properly at the senior levels. And it’s got to be encouraged and sort of enforced from the senior levels. Yes, and that would be a challenge if you’re senior management are the late adopters. Yeah, okay, not needed a champion at the most senior levels of the organization. You can say, hey, this is something we’re going to do. The time has come and everybody is going to get on board, and we’re going to get the right imam, the funding. We’re not goingto, you know, we’re not going to be too cheap about this. We’re going to get the right stuff in place, and we’re going to make the changes in how we do things around here, so that we’re really using this software and automating are our process is the right way. Don’t we have just about a minute left, or so i want to ask you, what is it that you love about the work that you’re doing? You know, i it’s, uh, a little bit nerdy, but i love efficiency. I love getting doing things better and faster. And in my own organization, it’s reflected by developing our own technology. We we rarely even by third party technology. We have a team of developers who build everything from scratch to do exactly what we want, its lead, the great efficiency and i think, whether your advanced enough to build your own or whether you’re buying software off the shelf there’s a great sense of momentum and pride that comes from getting better at what you do in getting more efficient and that’s what i love don fornes, ceo of software advice. Did what? Charities do the ah, fund-raising we at beth israel medical center here in new york city became public because of a will contest and ah, it’s fund-raising methods were the subject of a new york times story, which is probably something that we would all rather avoid, and i don’t think anybody wants their internal office processes splashed internationally on the new york times, but i saw very little that beth israel should be embarrassed about. I think they’re fundraisers, including their ceo, who, of course, we know should be a fundraiser. I did what they were supposed to be doing did what charities do they is the story of a woman who was living in the hospital, literally living in the hospital for twenty years. She was a resident of the hospital for twenty years, and the question is, were there was the hospital’s fund-raising tactics inappropriate? And i don’t think they were. I think they had a great prospect living among them, and they would have been, i think, careless if they hadn’t cultivated and solicited this woman for charitable gift. There were some emails and some notes to the between members are between employees that i think we’re a little carelessly, unprofessionally worded, but there’s nothing unethical, certainly nothing illegal, nothing fraudulent. So i don’t really think beth israel had that much to worry about when they’re fund-raising became public in the new york times, and i say more about that on my block, the post is a charity did what charities do on my block? Um how’s it going, it’s going really well, i mean, you know, there’s there’s, not a lot of time spent trying to figure out who are these people that i work with because i already got to work with them for the last over two years, so it feels like, you know, you could just jump in and we can start moving forward on all kinds of projects are already deep in the weeds of the next ntcdinosaur will be in march in d c, so lots of lots of action, lots of good stuff happening and t c, of course, is the non-profit technology conference? Yep, right, followers of intend may not know that. So what, you’re jargon jail? All right? No, no mass resignations since your appointment as ceo. Well, not yet. Knock on wood. I i don’t think that that’s the case. I think we’re all really excited to dive into work together. I think you know, any organization that’s gone through a transition, you you kind of let yourself feel like, well, maybe, you know, maybe we’ll go in a new direction. Maybe we won’t what’s goingto happen. And so once everything’s kind of decided, well, now we can just move forward on all those. Great ideas that we’ve been having and conversations that staff have together. It’s, like one day. Maybe we’ll do this. So now we can really start putting some of that into motion on. You were supposed to be in the studio with me today, but you had to be by phone because you have something going on in your apartment, right? Yes. Since we since i’m now the ceo and ten, we will be relocating back to portland, where the antenna main office is. And as such as manhattan real estate, as soon as our landlord know that we were moving out well, he wanted to start fixing it up for the new people. So some repairman is coming. Tio, work on the bathroom. Okay, lets you get a swelled head. As ceo. You still have to be still to be in your apartment to let the let the contractors in. Exactly right on dh. Do you know when you’ll be moving? Sorry. Very sorry to see you going. You won’t be live in the studio with me anymore. Or maybe you will one more time when you mean portlanders again in july. July. Okay, we’ll see whether we get you in the studio one more time or or not, i guess depending on when your move is in july. But very happy for your congratulations on your appointment. Thank you. I appreciate it. This seems like a good time to let listeners know. Remind listeners what? What? And ten is about what? What? What kind of help can small and midsize non-profits get from non-profit technology network? Sure so and ten is a non-profit ourselves. So we definitely understand what everyone else is going through. And where? The membership organization for anyone looking to use technology to meet your mission. So there’s no organizational size requirement there’s no budget requirement there’s no missions specific or cause specific focus that we have it’s really, truly for everyone that’s trying to use technology. Teo, be a little bit more effective and more efficient and meeting your mission. So we have the ntc like we mentioned before the non-profit technology conference, which is our annual conference in this coming year in d c we’re expecting over two thousand non-profit staffers, so it’ll be a big, really great conference at but then outside of that conference, we have about one hundred webinars a year that air on all different topic hoexter tailored to all different kinds of staff in an organization because, you know, for example, if you’re thinking about online fund-raising well, there’s some pieces of that that your staff are interested in, you know what air the pieces we need to have in place? And then there are pieces of online fund-raising thatyou’re development team want to know, like, how do we make the ask successfully online? So we try and make sure that there’s something for all those different sides of everyone in organization, and we have depending on the year between five to eight research reports on those air free to download for and ten members, and then, you know, outside of all of that, really a community so there’s over eleven thousand and ten members sixty thousand, largely in the community that aren’t necessarily paid level but attend webinars or have come to the conference. So there’s the probability of sets that there’s no way that there’s someone who hasn’t gone through what you’re going through at your organization and it’s a great place to come find those piers assam questions see how they’ve navigated that website redesign or that our processor, whatever it may be, and you make the point very well that this is not on ly for technologists who understand technology, but it’s for everybody in the organization. Exactly. I mean, it’s twenty thirteen, right? We’re all using technology. It doesn’t mean that we’re all directors, but we all need to use these tools to do our job. And so it’s a place where you can go regardless of what area in the organization you work in to find resource is that help you with your job, whether you’re in communications or you’re on the program team what whatever it may be, you’ll find antenna at and t e e n dot org’s cool. Think well, hopefully we’ll get you some new members on dh, actually attendees at ntc and viewers of your webinars and readers of your research reports because i think it’s very valuable what and ten does, and it is a it’s, a it’s, a morass in a black box for a lot of people and that it need not be right. Let’s, talk about storify and cora let’s do it. Okay. Storify what’s. Ah, i see. It described as content curation. What is this? Yeah, but kind. I mean, if you’re going to jargon jail me for ntc jargon jail you for contents curation because that sounds wonky. Well, i asked you to. I asked you to explain it e would know that wouldn’t be the way i actually think storify is really cool tool really cool platform because it is so directly the definition of social media it’s multidirectional, its share a ball, it’s public all of those pieces that we associate with you know what? These social tools online are that storify. So essentially you could go to storify you say i wantto i want to create a story. Um, and i want it to be about, uh non-profit radio looks put in the hashtag non-profit radio that’s what you wanted to do your store storify about today after you listen to the podcast and it will pull in all the media that it finds it’ll pull in the tweets if there are photos of tony’s taking photos in the studio and posting them, if there are videos posted, whatever kind of video that it confined with that hash tag non-profit radio and what’s great is that it doesn’t just pull it in and say, here you go, it shows you these air all the available pieces of content, you know we found and you get to very simply you don’t need to be a technologist to do this, but you can just drag and drop them into your post. You khun ad your own tax so you could say here’s a great quote from one of our live listeners and then pull that tweet over. Oh, are you know whatever those kind of like annotations would be, and then when you are finished compiling it, you can either embed the whole thing in your website or in your blog’s, or you can just share it out on twitter or facebook wherever you want to share it and have it stay on the storify website. You know where however you want to move it around and it’s? Great, because then people can go back and kind of see that recap of the conversation i think it’s used really well. Bye. Uh, newspapers, new york times used store fight all the time. Tio, pull in. You know what they’ve seen on a breaking news story. Kind of in real time, things like that. I see. And on all those examples that you gave by the way of non-profit radio, which is an outstanding example to use. Thank you. They all do exist. Wei have just a minute before a break. Do you have to start your storify with a hashtag or could you just use the phrase? I guess in quotes tony martignetti non-profit radio can you start that way? Yeah, you could try it that way. It’s it’s easier with hashtags only because you know that it’s a dedicated tag that people have been using. Whereas if you were trying to just search for you know any instance of someone saying non-profit technology, for example, there was it would just be too big and nebulous. Tohave a clean, you know, conversation captured. Okay. Non-profit radio is what you meant. Yep. Non-profit technology i understand. Just flows out. No, no, no. I meant non-profit technology. If you did that generally at the phrase versus for example, the hashtag and p tech. I see. Ok, ok. But you can edit out things that are extremely us right? Yet for sure. Okay. Hi there and welcome back, amy, this sounds like something that could be good for non-profit don’t have a social media team or director at all because you’re pulling in content that’s you’ve already created or that others have already created. Yeah, especially if you’re on organization where you’re having on event or you’re having, you know, you put out new report or you launched a new program or, you know, you’ve done something that’s gotten your community talking online about what you’re doing so so it’s about something specific, it doesn’t just generally, you know, i like and ten well, that’s terrific, and i would love tweets that say i like and ten, you know, it’s, not necessarily something to capture a story, so any time you’re doing something that is a little bit more time bounder or topic lee specific it’s it’s really easy because you now you have all this content and so you, khun, just like you said, even if you don’t have a social media are big communications department, you could just go pull it all together fairly quickly, but be it also means that now all those community members that got highlighted in your store if i get to feel like, oh my gosh, you know, my my tweet about the event or the photo that i took of, you know, the ballroom at the event got to be featured in the organization’s recap and that’s really cool for them as a member of the community who maybe i hadn’t ever really felt highlighted or, you know, called out by the organization before and now they’re kind of, you know, they get to shine as part of the recap, and that makes it more likely that they will share it with their communities exactly. Now, storify, when you said that it gives you the chance to either in bed or share, i guess or both the people that including the people that it shares with include the people who contributed to everything that got drawn in right duitz yes, exactly. It has a lot of built and sharing features on dh you can you can tell it not to do those things, but it try it wants to encourage you to send out a tweet, for example, tow any dahna any tweet that you included in your storify to send a reply to those people saying, hey, i highlighted you in my store if i and give them a link and then they, you know, it links back to the store if i so you can have, you know, when you have your storify account in your building, these specific stories they’ll stay on the story by account, you have a you know, profile there people can just follow your storify account if they want teo, but you could also embedded on your blogged on your website, maybe you maybe you created a storify for a specific offline event that you held and, you know, lots of people tweeted and shared photos and you create a storify well, that’s really great to go back to the event page and added there so now it’s like an archived, you know, event captured page and not just an old registration page, you can keep all that content there, so you’re extending the life of your content. Exactly. I get a tweet like that whenever i participate in a in a twitter chat called fundchat hashtag fund, and at the end of the chat, i got a tweet that says you’re included in my storify for the fir fundchat today here? No, okay, i think it’s a really great tool for twitter, chat because it’s, when you are participating in the chat, i think it’s fairly easy to follow along, but if you aren’t participating in that moment in the chat and you want to go back and look at the hash tag later, it just doesn’t make any sense. You know, you need that storify where the organizer can move people’s replies to fit underneath the question, you know, instead of in-kind of the ad hoc free sabelo that they may have actually come in that move them out of the time stamped order of when they were sent. But which question is this person answering and that kind of thing, right? Put them into a logical order. Yeah, yeah. Interesting, though, that they do come with the time stamp too. I like that. It pulls in all the all the original features of the of the piece of content. Okay, let’s, let’s. Give some time to quarrel. Qu qu o r a i won’t try to describe it since i got admonished with the store. If i so, how would you, amy sample ward to? Find describe quarrel for listeners. Sure, so cora is essentially a q and a site, so you or others could submit a question, and then you or others could submit an answer and, unlike certain other question and answer websites that you may have seen or if you have ever, like, done an internet search just for a question, and then you see all of these, like different kinds of forums and q and i websites come up where someone else’s asked that question, cora tries to keep it really limited so that there’s there’s not just like a forever stream of answers, but that there are really, you know, prominent answers to that question on which is, you know, something that kind of plays up a positive feature. So you’re not sifting through and wondering which of these answers is the real answer and it’s a place where both organizations and, uh, you know, individuals of all different backgrounds have have really established some of their energy online as a thought leader. A resource to whatever kind of niche field there in so it’s not just about tax analogy about everything under the sun and people are there you know, some people ask a question and then answer at themselves because they want teo share information about that topic, but others see questions that others have posted and go in and provide an answer. I’ve answered a question on what’s the best way to get a taxi cab in new york city, huh? So i don’t know that an expert, but i had a couple of suggestions. I see too many people standing on the curb, you’re gonna be out there, you could be in the middle of the street practically. We’ve gotta want that. You gotta be at least twenty five percent of the way into the street if you’re not. If you’re not in danger of getting run over, then you’re not going. You’re not an effective cab camp. Hell, that’s, how you’re stopping the taxi is by preventing them from driving further down the street. All right, so we just have a minute or so left. How could non-profits use quorra? Sounds like credibility is very good. How else? What? Why else? Well, i think there are lots of ways whether you want to talk about your you know, the field in which your organization works. And provide answers say, you work in public education and you want to go, you know, maybe someone has posted a question that says, what does a charter school mean you if you work in public education, you probably know, and you want to provide a on answer, i think the thing to keep in mind is that it is a very individual driven platform. And so if you have, you know, your executive director, maybe of a policy director you have, you know, whoever it may be in your organization think about having more than one person with an account and providing those answers as that credible individual that represents the organization, so that you created a little bit of space between that answer and your organization and have also said, well, of course our policy director is answering this question because it’s about public policy and we have an expert on this, you know, and that’s why we’re such a credible organization qu o r a dot com. Norma’s joining me from sarasota, florida norm. Welcome. Well, thank you. Nice to be with you, tony it’s. A pleasure to have you. Thank you were talking about leadership on dino. You start with the premise that everything starts with leadership. Let’s, start very general and have you tell me what is a good leader in your mind? Well, obviously, when we’re talking about non-profits a good leader, and when i say leader, i mean either volunteers or staff, uh, the key is obviously a commitment and passion for the mission. I mean, it all starts with that. And then it it’s a question of of people who are serious about the business of non-profits there’s some but there’s a whole lot of, uh, skill and science related to non-profits but there’s also the art the relationships of uh, that are involved in a successful non-profit so having a combination of both people who are willing to take some risk, but also who are creative, who can establish and bring in additional people who are passionate about the organization and it could bring resource is and talents that are necessary to be successful. And i love that you start with the commitment and passion, but obviously that’s not sufficient that’s it’s necessary, but not sufficient many, uh, organization that had very committed and passionate people who knew about the mission failed because they don’t have the skill and the knowledge of the relationships, the influence or the leadership necessary toe taken organization to ah level, where could be sustainable? And this is a business you mentioned being serious about the business. You do have to have a business sense and run run this organization like one. You know, a lot of people don’t realize that talk about non-profits but not profits are corporations non-profit is a status of the i r s but when you talk about a corporation, any business to be successful has tohave the components and the plans and the leadership. Behind it that they’re going to make things happen and, you know, so marketing is as important to fund-raising and, uh uh, financial development and budgeting, all of those things that businesses have to deal with are the same that non-profits have to deal with. I think people get a stark surprise when they learned that the first step to creating their new charity is incorporating in the state that they want to be in that just to just reinforce your point. This is a corporation it’s, a not for profit corporation, and you have to incorporate and there’s your first your first introduction if you hadn’t realized that, uh, this is going to be a business, you know, and you will know and have written about extensively, there are regulations that govern corporations and their specific regulations that govern non-profit organizations. Yes, i’ve heard rumors to that effect. I do a lot of work around charity registration, that’s one narrow small compliance area for charities um, and there were many of the state and federal level, so the so the sense of being a business i think is is shocking to a lot of people who come into a a new charity with that passion and motivation for helping people but they they don’t realize what they’re into for the long term and in its agriff it aggregate the non-profit sector is one of the largest corporate sectors in america. When you look at total assets, total income, total number of employees um after retail and manufacturing, the non-profits sector is the third largest in the nation. Interesting, excellent. Okay, so let’s broaden little bit. We don’t because we don’t want to talk just about people who are starting a charity. So leadership, as you said, of course, staff or volunteer. But with staff, this could be well, even volunteers. This could be leadership at any level, right? We’re not just talking about the executive director and the chair of the board. No. Leadership is key at all levels. From your receptionist to the person who answers the phone to the people who were involved in strategic planning, uh, from top to bottom. Everybody needs to contribute their leadership capabilities for an organisation to be successful. Interesting. You mentioned even the, uh, the receptionist? Absolutely. Absolutely. The receptionist is usually the first contact that a person has with an organization, whether it be a client, oh, a member or a donor. And if that if that contact is not one that is receptive and, uh, customer friendly and doner makes into account all sorts of dona relationships, then you’re starting off on on, ah, negative to begin with. So, uh, everybody needs to do their jobs well, understand how they fit into the overall organization and the importance that they play towards the success of the organization going forward way. Welcome back, big non-profit ideas for the other ninety five percent um, norm let’s talk a little about the the art of leadership that you mentioned not only the business side but the art what’s involved there. Well, clearly part of the role of a leader, a true leader is to be able to motivate others and motivating others means setting and being a good role model, being a good listener, being a person that allows others to bring to the table their talents and skills and knowledge and fuel ownership to the overall venture. So a true leader is somebody whether it’s, a staff leader or volunteer leader, is someone who engages others who is a role model, who’s says follow me because i’m willing to do anything i’m asking of you, uh, who sets the bar high expectations high and is a, uh a gung ho uh, passionate about the organization. So, uh, when we talk about people who have influence people who are charismatic, they’re your best best leaders in an organization if they also know how to relate to people and engage people in a positive way. Let’s, apply some of this too, recruiting you might. Be recruiting staff or you might be recruiting volunteer leaders. What are what are some what? Some of the actual tips you know that we can we can convey the listeners around recruiting the best people for your for your organization? Well, there’s so many, many things to consider and as as we mentioned in the book that’s put out by charity channel press, when you’re looking at, uh, recruiting leaders, you’re looking at both sides of the equation, people that are going to bring skills or re sources that are needed for the organization and people who could be team players, people who care passionately about what you’re doing and people who are, uh, going to keep the interests of the organization above their self interests. Now, how do we recruit to find those attributes? Well, typically, volunteers are engaged in an organization at all different levels and based on the way they perform in their entry level rolls, uh, people then are elevated into positions of more responsibility in terms of professional staff. You’re looking for people that have a particular skill set that you need, whether that be in the back office or whether that be in fund-raising whether that be in operations or service delivery um, and then people who fit into the culture of the organization too often way neglect the fact that every organization has its own history and background and, uh, relationships that have existed over ah short or long period of time and bringing people in who don’t fit into that culture can be problematic, so personality becomes a critical factor over the buggles. So are we basing a lot of our recruitment on on instinct then as we ascertained somebody’s personality while we’re talking to them? Yeah, it’s some of it is instinct of people who’ve been around a long time, and i’ve been involved in human resource is develop uh uh, the instincts, but the instincts or developed based on science, for instance, you don’t want somebody who is always in need of socializing and as always, needs to be around people in whatever to be sitting in front of a computer all day. Likewise, you don’t want somebody who is that academic focus type of intellectual, um, to be the one who’s going to be in your sales force or marketing or, um, uh fund-raising areas so personality is as much as important as looking at the actual skills set that someone brings to a job all right, i have had a couple of guests on who, when they’re interviewing people liketo recommended asking about impact, much the way donors air looking for organizational impact. What impact did you have in a difficult situation and listen to stories about how they dealt with people? Dealt with a difficult situation may be difficult person and what the what the outcome was there there you no good interviewers can develop scenarios where they can see how well people handle themselves on their feet thinking quick, but also how open people are, because a lot of people, um, will in an interview especially they want to project the best possible scenario for their own employment and chances of getting that job. And, uh, if they’re not, if you don’t find, uh, the humanness of a person, the ability to recognize what they don’t know, they’re our willingness to acknowledge some of the things that they’ve they have not been as successful with. Yes, you know way all have our strengths and weaknesses and it’s so important in a work environment that you have the type of employees that could be very upfront and candid and and have a lot of self awareness as to what their skillsets are what they need to learn more about and the like. So, that’s, what you really want a probe in an interview to see how comfortable people are and knowing that interviews or stressful situation. So part of what you’re doing is seeing how people handle stress schnoll once you have recruited the types of staff and volunteers that that you’re aspiring to, you need to keep them motivated about their work, and i think that’s a lot of leadership also there made their difficult times there’s going to be fun times there’s going to be tensions? Ah, leadership a leader needs to manage in all these different environments. Yes, and a good a good leader any good professional, in fact, eyes always looking for additional knowledge. Uh, additional resource is, uh, how to do there roll their job better. Um so organizations that encourage, uh, training and in service and education and opportunities, tto learn are the organizations that are the most sustainable and successful one of the things that we’ve learned in human resource is that job satisfaction is not as highly related to compensation as it is to people feeling that their position and an organization is recognized, that job that they’re doing is meaningful and that they’re given opportunities to grow and learn in their roles. Yes, that’d be a volunteer work staff. Yes, and i’ve seen survey results or study results about that in the popular press again, that job satisfaction doesn’t come primarily from compensation, but from feeling of feeling, of belonging and membership and commitment that that the person feels for the organization and that knowing that the leadership feels toward them. One of the biggest problems i see is that non-profits too often are are so heavily focused on problem solving that they forget to celebrate their successes and, uh, encourage others, uh, to recognize everyone’s participation and involvement in an organization on dh their role in that success, it’s, not just the board chair and the ceo that are responsible and should be recognized for the success of an organization you mentioned education and training, but in bad times recession or just lean times for an organisation, irrespective of what’s happening in the macro economy, those are things that tend to get cut pretty quickly conference spending bringing consultants for in for training things like that tend to go get cut pretty quick. Well, that that is true, and it is a challenge, but like with anything in the nonprofit world, challenges can be overcome. There are many non-profit resource centers and, uh, universities that offer free workshops, there are opportunities through professional organizations in the light to get mentors for staff. There are opportunities even for a portion of every board meeting in tow have, uh, learning experiences. So the problem is that organizations that are not strategic are not going to be as success was they could be, and part of being strategic is thinking forward, how am i going to help develop my staff and volunteers so that they’re going to be able to take on the challenges that we’re going to be facing going forward? And if you’re not thinking ahead and only thinking about putting out fires? It’s ah, problem and that’s a challenge in this economy because so many organizations are struggling economically, so you have to think smart, act smart and use your resource is carefully, it all falls. To the little falls to the leader. I mean, for the organization to be strategic, the leadership needs to be right. But after buy-in throughout the organization on what that vision is and what that plan is. Yes. Okay, yeah, you know? Right. Yeah. I’m gonna correct myself. It doesn’t all fall to the leadership, but it all starts with the leadership. Exactly. Okay, that’s, that was how we started the whole conversation today. And that is everything starts with leadership. Andi, we’re going to continue the conversation. I just want to remind listeners normal. Sanski is a consultant and co editor of you and your non-profit published by charity channel press. Norm let’s talk a little about succession that we’ve recruited in. Hopefully retained good volunteers and good staff succession planning. And you want one of the articles in the store in the in the book is your own article on succession planning around volunteers. This is a critical, uh, um, teacher or component or requirement of non-profits to be successful. Uh, we mentioned earlier how important culture is and the history of an organisation and having people who understand that history and you have the experience is so if you do not have a good succession plan, you are of setting yourself up for dramatic changes every time. There’s a change of leadership, whether that be volunteer leadership or, uh, staff leadership. So having a succession plan, knowing what you would do in a scenario where a person leaves or persons term expires, uh, those things need to be thought out. Uh, we usually recommend that, uh, with the lay leadership that you have clear, um, succession in terms of if you have vice presidents, that there’s an expectation that the vice president or if you have multiple vice president’s, one of those vice presidents is being groomed to be the next chair of the board with staff that there’s cross training so that you always want to be aware of the mack truck we call it effect where if a key staff person is, is unfortunately in an automobile accident and is out for months or leaves uh, the organization that you’re not completely vulnerable, that you have others who understand what their job was. I could step in and help with that. So succession planning is critical. The other thing that a lot of people don’t realize is that when you’re involved with non-profits, we talked about the passion and commitment to the mission. Well, it’s also key what happens when people move through that succession plan and say someone was the board chair and now they’re no longer board chair? Well, they’ve been involved the years in a very intense way, and if they’re completely cut off, you could lose a very experienced leader. So how you work with prior leadership and how you help people with that transition is very important, too, in the article in the book goes into a lot of the issues related to succession planning the structures for that in the light. They’re also articles on my blogged specifically related to this issue and you block is that n f p consulting dot com uh n f consulting dot blogged spot dot com that’s, the block post okay, and the other is the actual consulting practice. Okay, i want to flush out a little more the the volunteer leadership succession because you do suggest that the past chair be active. Obviously the current chair is, and then also as you said, the vice president of one of the vice president is chair elect, don’t you now have three share people vying for leadership? Um, not if the rolls and the culture of the organization are very clear is to the responsibilities of leadership, and i can’t tell you how many times i’ve gone into organizations and found that they did not have clear job descriptions for each of the positions. Oh, job now, does that belong in the board’s by-laws, or is that elsewhere? No. That’s. Ah, separate separate item. You know, the by-laws usually have a very brief description of responsibilities of officers, but, um, uh, more complete, uh, job description. Just a cz you would have for employees. Should be for every one of the officers and board members of the organization where you have, what is their responsibilities? How much time is expected of them? Are they expected to make a contribution or to solicit funds? What are the events or programs that they should be participating in? Ah, what sub committees or task forces, um, are their expectations that they serve on all of those things? Should be outlined in a job description for volunteer leadership. Justice he would stab. Okay, andi, we have just a couple of minutes left, and i want you to share what your thoughts are around what, what it is that you love about it leadership topics and motivating leaders. Well, one of the things is a consultant is so very special is when you, khun trance, for the skills and knowledge you’ve experienced over ah, whole career to an organization where they are able to then go forward using those skills and no longer be dependent on the consultant. Uh, so really uh, uh, consultant and the wonderful way that i love working with leadership is you always start where people are at their never all at the same place, and once you assess where they’re at, then taking them forward to where they can be and helping them to have a vision of what’s possible eyes what’s very exciting because i’ve never met anybody in a non profit organization that didn’t have good intentions, but a lot of people in non-profits have no clue as to how to implement successfully their good intentions. And in just about thirty seconds we have left it’s got to be very gratifying to help someone achieve their full potential as a leader, no. Question. No question about that, and also so many people have helped me through. My career is just great to be able to give back whether it be susan consulting or publishing that’s, the joy of being what i would call a senior professional in the field. Normal. Take two my block this week is the modest are more generous this’s known to a lot of people, but i just felt like paying attention to it this week because i’ve seen some recent press around it, especially around the chronicle of in the chronicle of philanthropy. Um, the research that consistently shows that people of modest means give a higher percentage of their income, then the wealthy do, i think that’s very interesting. And so at the macro level, not surprising, poorer communities don’t need a higher percentage of their income, then then wealthier communities. We find that across the south states in the south are typically maur generous as a percentage of income than, say, the northeastern states. And so that creates us curious generosity, divide and on my block this week i have links teo articles by the chronicle of philanthropy on this, and they also have an interactive graphic showing generosity throughout the country and that’s all on my blogged at tony martignetti dot com that is tony’s take two for friday, the nineteenth of october forty fourth show of the year with me now, as she is every month, maria simple maria, how you doing out there? So i thought these were both two really interesting developments that could be very, very useful for non-profits and we might want to, you know, give them a little time and highlight them and show people how they can use them, especially since they’re free. Okay, i love it. You always come with free on very low cost resource is outstanding that i’m always good for that you’re very well known for that. So let’s, start with the one that’s directly from lincoln that is bored. Connect that’s, correct board connect just launched. In the last couple of weeks, lincoln gave some announcements about it, and they have a website set up where people can learn more information and i’ll make sure i share that on your facebook page. But it’s non-profit and the linked in group two don’t forget the link down it’s right that way talking about lengthen your going to everything on facebook so the page that people can look for this is non-profits dot lincoln dot com and so basically at a high level overviewing let me give you an idea what it is. It is, uh, access to what they call their talent finder tool on it is a premium account level, and so it has a thousand dollar value, which is a kn annual value the thousand dollars subscription that can be obtained for free by one person at the non-profit um, so you really didn’t need to figure out who that one person is going to be that’s going to have access to this and let me tell you what with the tool can do, and then you might be able to envision you know, who would be the best connector at your non-profit you noto have this tool so basically it enables you to really look for board members, and i’m sure that tool can be used in other ways. But it’s really meant to help you find boardmember zina very systematic tearaway instead of sitting around at a board meeting and saying, well, who do we know that can help fill this gap? Let’s say you have a gap, you need somebody and maybe the financial services or accounting field, and you really would like to have that expertise on your board you can use it will give you expanded search capacity, uh, on your advanced search page of lengthen and we’ve talked about that the usefulness before of that page, but now it’s going to give you access to more search field so you’ll be able to really find to search the other great feature that it has is twenty five in males a month are included. So have we talked about in they’ll know we haven’t esso let’s? No, i don’t think so. We haven’t, so no, that is a way to connect directly to someone and send them just as it says in in mail and email, basically within the lincoln. Space ah, and you get up to twenty five per month. And they say that if you don’t get it sponte back from the person within seven days, you kind of get a credit back-up one typically you have to you have to have linked in pro in order to use in male. Don’t you that’s correct. So that that’s? Why? For for one and non-profit one person connected to the non-profit soak to really? I’ve talked to it. Some of my other colleagues who are you know who love linked in a cz well, you may from heart is talking about them before jerry tangle and mark help they were goes on the show. There were panelists with you one time that’s right that’s, right? And we really think that in order for this to really work well, the person who has this access should have at least three hundred fifty connections of their own and way think that the magic will really happen really at five hundred and up. So think through who at at your your non-profit would have that level of connections. Um, you might want to give the access to perhaps at the boardmember who? Might be better connected on lengthen uh, maybe the person in charge of your board, croup, mint committee or something like that. But it will give you access to this talent. Find your tool they have with bored connect there going to be providing some additional educational webcasts, and they have a group that they’ve started within lengthen called the board connect group. So you’ll be able to have a pierre network who are using this tool effectively. Ok, let’s, talk a little more about the details of it. How do we how do we go about using it? So as i said, you really access it through the talent. Find your tools through the advanced search page and having those more advanced search filters. You’re going to be able to also see expanded profiles of people who are outside your network. And maria let’s, just stop the advanced search tool. That’s was that’s in the upper right corner. Yes, that’s in the upper right corner. So you have a search box which would appear on your home page of lincoln. Just to the right of that. There is a clickable links called advanced search that that’s what you want? To click onto, and then many more, many more fields will open up for you, but only the person who’s authorized to use the talent finder tool. Well, anybody can it can access advance, right? Right. However, having the talent find your tool will get you more fields to search on. Okay, right, you’ll see you’ll see an expanded page over what everybody else was using donorsearch let’s say you’re really only interested in connecting with people who have maybe a title of cfo within a certain radius, but also you want to make sure that they’re within fortune five hundred companies or they have a minimum of two hundred employees, so you can really start filtering out and really coming up with a very concise list. Um, actually, jerry, just jerry stengel just did this very effectively for aboard the cheese on in in manhattan, and she blogged about it. Um, i don’t know if you’re familiar with beth cantor. She blogged about it. I’m beth cantor’s blogged on september twenty fourth, so that might be something people want to refer to cause she actually kind of goes about outlining how she used this tool her sir self to find some people who have a perfect match for for the board and she’s in conversation with several of those people right now. Excellent. All right, so jerry stengel blogged on beth cantor’s, a guest blogger on beth cantor was spelled k way also kind of highlighted. You know how jerry used this particular tool on a web in or that we recorded on october second, which is actually linked to that webinars also accessible there on the blog’s link. So on the best i mean, on the breast cam trying to, you know, let people know in a in a variety of mediums help. How can use okay, now what you mean the link to the webinar is on the best cancer blogger. Yes, you can also get you could get to it from jerry’s website venture near dot com, but you can also get to it from from that original block post that came out on a september twenty four. Okay, beth cantor is k and tr and the jerry stengel blogged where you can also find this is his venture near and that’s venture and e r dot com as if you’re a pioneer, but not that you’re near adventure, as in close to adventure ventured here like pioneer ok, so what has your own experience been? We’re talking about everybody else in the world what’s your own experience, but i was playing around with it for a little bit. I wanted to see, you know what would be, you know, the advantage of having all those additional search features and, you know, it really does greatly narrowed the pool, and you can really get a very nicely refined list of potential prospects that you want to reach out. Tio so really it’s been developed for, you know, trying to find talent, you know, for individuals that would be great. Boardmember cz individuals, that would be potentially great to be working for your organization, but also, you know, i like the fact that they have you can set up the searches, and then you can set up a ten search alert. So normally with a free linkedin account, you can set up three saved searches, but this will give you the capacity to save up to ten so you’re you’re saving your search criteria and then as someone new joins, link dane or changes their profile and becomes ah, search result for you. Then you find out automatically. Yes, yes. Lincoln will push the information to you. And you can decide to have that a search alert set up, say, to push the info to you once a week, if you like or, you know, daily. So it’s, really your choice on dh? I think that that could be particularly useful feature as well, you know, especially for non-profits that are in in a mode of really needing to revamp their board or they have a certain number of slots they feel they really would like to fill it’s a great way for you to set up the searches and have lengthened just pushed the information to you. Okay? And that’s all the talent finder tool in linked in which you’ll find through, give the earl again for getting started. Non-profit dot linkin dot com okay, cool. Yeah, they give a nice little overview, you know, tutorial, etcetera and what’s. Really kind of cool, too. If they give you fly that you can share with your board at an upcoming board meeting to really help educate them. How lengthen can help with with board recruitment. And so forth. So they really have thought it through in terms of how it can be useful for you is a non-profit professional. But how can you then share this message with your own board on? I love that you recommend that it could be a volunteer who you are, who you choose. Tio, have the special account that’s, right? That’s, right? I mean, the non-profit will need to go through, you know, supplying i believe their e i n tax number. Right there must be someone you know verified non-profit and force that’s getting this this access because it is, you know, with thousand dollar value, the annual value. So i think it’s fantastic that they’re making this available for the non-profit community at this level. It’s going to take boyd recruitment to a whole other level. Interesting. So let’s say you have you no other family, friends, etcetera, contacts who just aren’t using the lengthen product you can still use this reasons to call and its reasons to the numeral too reasons to call dot com um, so i’ve been i’ve been using it for the last couple of weeks, and it’s been emailing me is the upcoming birthdays, birthdays today so it’s an opportunity for you to have a touchpoint with someone, right? And i remember, i guess it was on october fifth you had andrian nuremberg on your show, and she was talking about the importance of staying in touch with people understanding their preferred sensitive communication. Not all but some what they’re doing is similar to what facebook does when it lets, you know that someone’s birthday is, is this week or today, right? But, you know, on facebook you might not be connected to all of these professional colleagues, right? I mean, i know i’m not i’m not connected to people that i know professionally, my my lincoln connections are actually much more extensive than my facebook connections, nor and so the fact that, you know, of course somebody would have to have this on their profile. So, tony, if i wanted to reach out to you and wish you a happy birthday, um, you would have to have that field without your linkedin profile in order for this information to get pushed to me that you’ve got a birthday, okay, right? So you don’t have to ask you don’t ask for no, i’m looking here, for example, at my dashboard right now on reasons to call and it’s giving me people who have birthdays in the next seven days. I’ve got four people i can reach out to from my network, it’s breaking it down birthdays within a month and beyond. So really, really cool tool, you know, as a touchpoint opportunity with someone? Yeah, sort of ah consolidated anniversary birthday book, but but you mentioned also sports if your sports teams do well, is there a field in lincoln where people put their sports? You know, some people feel i haven’t seen people filling out too much in terms of particular sport teams, but they have filled out under the hobbies section of their linked in profile say they like hockey or skiing or tennis, so i’m actually getting on the particular news section. For example, i can look at your con my contacts, interests, breaking news related to my contacts, interest so i’ve got some contacts who have talked about cycling. I’m looking at here on my dashboard october ninth they’re talking about, uh, cycling road tour beijing classifications blackbaud law. So i mean, if there were and then it will tell me which of my contacts have cycling as something that they’ve noted on their profiles. So, hey, you know, if this is something i know that’s interesting to them, i might send them this particle about cycling and you know the results for sure here, right? Right. Mary-jo no, senora, welcome, amjad no, tony, actually bump a gritty joe. Oh, i’m stumped already. What does that mean? Good. I mean, good afternoon. Okay. Thank you. I said, well, good one, john doe is ok. Can i use that? Anytime? Of course. Okay. There’ll be plenty of opportunities for you to correct me, so don’t don’t don’t jump it small, small things that i get the half right. Well, you’ve already tagged me as a true italian, so i have to live with that. All right, all right. We’re talking about strategic alliances. Abbondanzieri, alliances. What is your definition of a strategic alliance? Ah, a strategic alliance. Our two entities that are committed to each other’s success. It’s that simple. That simple. Okay, what do they what sort? Of things, do they do they do together? What? Where they committed to each other’s success. Well, uh, first of all, because it’s beneficial to both of them, uh, you want to start when you’re dealing with a non-profit teo, look at where are their supporters coming from eyes their common thread. Is there something that is unique to both of them? And you start to develop a plan of what do they need to do together? What are their goals? What? What were they looking to accomplish? Okay, so i put it down on paper. Okay, so we’re starting to look. We’re sorry. Look, for commonalities, something in common maybe could be same constituency could be related. Work would be one’s work and maybe one’s interest in in joining that work. But they’re not currently doing it. Would that be acceptable, partner? Yes, acceptable. Someone whose mission statement is similar. Okay, i pulled the listeners before the show and asked, have you looked outside your organization for other charities or cos you can ally yours with? And i think it’s very positive. One hundred percent said yes, they have done that. And the other option was no, i better listen to the show, hopefully people other than the survey listeners are listening to the show because it is only that i mean the survey completed because it was only a survey complete er’s then they wouldn’t be listening to the show unless they wanted to get even more than just strategic alliances from it. So hopefully there’s other people, but i’m sure there are no yes, and it also is that maybe those people who actually doing things on and have developed these strategical lines can do it more efficiently. They want to learn more exactly it’s where they’re listening to the show. What? What a business development person you are for me. Thank you. So now we have identified that we can save some money at this too. These don’t need to be costly, right? Yes. It is a miss in the marketing community. Uh, that in order to create business or create revenue, you need to throw money at marketing. Okay, you don’t really have to spend thousands of dollars. Some of it is right underneath your nose in terms of developing business, it’s just a different way of thinking outside the box. And so for little. Or no money. We can also get sort of ah, multiplier effect, because you’re going to be learning and gaining from your your alliance partner correct, i have actually had non-profits i’m working with or have worked with in the past that have increased their donations, or they’re giving ten percent with a one strategic alliance, okay? And but of course, it doesn’t end with increased giving. You could maybe increase volunteers or maybe gained new board members, right? I mean, there’s other things besides just giving go ahead so well in the nonprofit world, we’re always looking to do a lot more with less, and we all know that if you have been in non-profit you know that especially in these economic times, so you’re trying to think outside the box of what can you d’oh? How can you multiply your success? Whether it’s having people attend an event, whether it’s donations, whether its membership, um, there’s so many different ways and you can have strategic alliances in different areas, they don’t necessarily all have to result in just donations. So that’s the in the box thinking you need to step out of the box. Okay, so are there. Other things than the ones i mentioned that could be gained from a strategic alliance. Yes, um for instance, who you definitely have membership. You have donations. You have attendance at different events from you. If you’re doing a huge fundraiser, uh, and you want to have two hundred people that will how do you get for hundred people there? So it’s it’s different things that you want to look at? You wantto align yourself with maybe a different venue vendors that air providing services to the non-profit different other organizations that have the same mission statement. It’s endless. Okay, okay, way have just about a minute before a break. So why don’t we just start to talk about how do you start to find these partners? And then we’ll take a break and continue it. Okay, what i usually do when i’m working with non-profits has asked them where their supporters are coming from and kind of get a baseline of what they’ve done in the past and what they haven’t tried. And then then i go a little bit further and then start to do the creative part. Okay, the that thinking beyond what they’ve been doing, correct. Okay, all right. We’re talking about how you start too find the strategic partners are going to be that are going to be with an alliance with you. So how do we how do we get started with that? Well, we definitely have tio have a baseline when i’m working with a new non-profit you need a baseline, you need to know what they’ve done in the past and what they have not tried, according to to the strategy i implement with them and start to look at, uh, alliances that they currently have and then look at alliances that they may need to. Develop uh, i am definitely in the frame of mind to understand and teo latto isolate that this doesn’t does not need to be a process in which you need to spend a lot of money to do. You may spend the money in furthering relationships, but not necessarily to develop them on. And then once you’ve identified, you know and you’ve identified a partner, you want to know what their goals are, what goals are what your goals are. Wait, let’s, not go let’s, not go too fast. We still have to need some help identifying the right partners. You and of course, a consultant could be indispensible for this. But there are small charities that may need to do it on their own. I would think networking is a part of trying to find the right organization, right? You want to be out there in the community? Absolutely. You want to have a very professional web presence? Some of the charities that i have work with, uh, have excellent websites. Very easy to use. Very that you can maneuver and find them very easily. They have very clear, clean look, help them. Whatever makes the process simple and if you make it difficult for feeding people to find you, they’re not going to find you, obviously, and and while they’re looking for you, you could be out on the web looking for for for partners as well. How would that research where’s that research look like? Well, it depends on, you know, again identifying what you’re looking for, that’s half the battle on, once you identified the type of person that the type of alliance that you want, then it makes it easier to search the web, of course, okay, and we’ve been talking about outside partners, but this you could have an alliance with people that are already known to you, they’re just they’re not sure how to how to help you write direct or they’re not sure how to help you. So when you have these partners, they act as an advisory board as a board of directors that can help you grow your business and buy-in versa. Okay, i got to send some live listener love out. A little about goals. What might some of our goals of these strategic alliances b the goal for any non-profit of courses is donation worships? Uh, getting people out to events, tendencies if you have a gal, a golf outing and you have no one that comes so you know, it makes it’s no use or if you’re promoting that gal thought in three weeks before the event it’s not working, but if you take your database and within the database, you have organizations that you are aligned with that have, um, you know, an email database of ten thousand each, then multiplied your success. Okay, right. So, there’s, your multiplier, because you’re going to be sharing marketing in your example, you’re going to be sharing marketing with them, and they’ll be sharing with you and correct there’s, your there’s, your multiplayer. Okay, those of course, our relationships that are concrete that are developed and there’s a win win for both parties, right? What? So now, how do you translate some of your goals or your specific goals for the alliance into the right strategic alliance partners? Well, because you’re you’re going to determine what the goal is for both. Parties, you’re going to determine what are what are both parties looking to get out of the relationship? And is it feasible? Okay, i’m going to evaluate that over a period of time. But, i mean, as you’re doing your research to try to find the right partners, how do you go from the goal of, you know, we want more people at our golf outing next year to finding the partners that are going to help you do that to researching, you know, finding the right potential partners, right? You’re going to see if you can find the people who are commited the people who are have a vested interest in your organization in your mission and may be a partner for that particular event. A corporation, you know, a donor aa sponsor. Okay. Okay. Um and when we have identified the right alliance partner or partners, then i assume there’s some negotiation that goes on, say little about that. Yeah, you want tio? I don’t get too involved in the process. What i’d like to do is basically to write the goals down and tow. Have both parties sign it so that we know six months from now. What have we committed to and what was your portion of the deal? And what is my portion of the deal and agreed to that? Because over a period of time, people tend to forget what they promised each other, right, so and then evaluated. Okay on, we’ll get to those steps, but but the process of negotiating what’s going to be in the agreement, you know, you’ve got to give some i’ve got to give some and there’s just going, tio, we’re trying to accomplish i’m sorry. So based on what gold both parties are trying to accomplish, okay, right? And now you said you like to see this in a assigned writing should both parties actually be signing this? I believe that you should have the commitment. Yes, my my attitude has changed quite a bit over the last couple of years on that tony on ly because, like i said, i people have short memories. Sounds like you got your client’s got screwed is what you’re saying. Well, now, you know they’ll say, well, now i didn’t promise you that. Well, yes, you did. Uh, people forget what they always sit down when you’re having a meeting. And people forget so a one page document of both parties. Responsibilities signed by both parties, i think, makes more sense. Okay. And isn’t usually the executive director seo’s that you see having these conversations or is it somewhere lower or board level? What, depending on mott non-profits it’s usually the executive director? Yes. Okay. Okay. And of course, there’s an important something else you touched on evaluation, of course. So you say something about evaluating this? Well, in order for this strategic aligns tow work, both parties have to be committed. It has to be a win win if one party is winning and the other one is losing than over a period of time. It’s just going to fall apart. So you want to make sure that you evaluated every three months hyre so that neither one of the parties is wasting too much time. If the alliance is not working or if the alliance is working, just how do how do we make it work more efficiently? Okay, so we’ll go back to that written document and evaluate based on that correct and then makes the adjustment. Okay? And we can’t be afraid. Teo cut ties when things aren’t going so well, correct? There is not working for either party. It really is not it’s a waste of time and money. Okay. You have, ah, client example of successful alliance that you want to share. Yeah, actually. For the non-profit i am currently involved with, uh, which is the centre for italian? Italian american culture is an organization that has been in existence twenty one years. Um, i been in my position for the last three and a half. Last year. We were able to produce for our annual fundraiser events seventy two thousand dollars in one night. Okay. And that was significant increase, i assume, over past years, correct. It was one of the most successful in twenty one years. Okay, so it’s, not like the year before was seventy one thousand five hundred. Okay, we probably took it to the point where we did double or tripled. Um, the success. Okay. Okay. I pulled listeners for their own success around strategic alliances. And about eighty five percent said either they’ve done this either very successfully or somewhat successfully. About fifteen percent said no, not not so successful. What? What problems have you seen that we can help listeners overcome onda void when you’re developing these alliances, they both parties need to be committed. Okay, sometimes you have situations in which one party is not as committed as the other, and so there’s sort of an imbalance there. So even though even though they commit, they’re not really committed, correct? They make promises, they don’t promise, they promise and don’t deliver. Yeah, okay. Okay. So how do you how do you make sure that you’re alliance partner is serious. Ah, well, you start by choosing the right partners. It’s, just like a marriage. You start by choosing the right partner, right band. If if if. If you’re not choosing the right partner from the beginning, it really makes no difference how much effort of time or money you’re putting into it. It’s really not gonna work? So, exactly. But how do we do? Make sure that we’re getting the right partner, like instinct and research of you know what? What’s your advice around, making sure we got that right, partner. You have to kind of feel it out. It’s every every relationship is different. Every it depends on whether it’s a new relationship or something that has been there’s a history there. You have to really evaluate each individual situation is different, but you want to trust your gut instinct if your instinct for me it’s instinct, not for a lot of other people, i can pretty much read whether the relationship is going to work or not work for the non-profit or a client. Okay. On dh. Probably a good idea to maybe start small in your alliance. Start with a smaller project to do together is what i mean, something like that. Something maybe that works that way. But there many times, like in your particular industry, finding a person who has ah, ah, lot of money that they want to donate to a tower charity would be wonderful. Uh, and you know, something like that. How do you start small? You really don’t it’s a person who either want to do it or they don’t. So it’s. Very simple, simple process and my job as a consultant to these entities, there’s, just to make the process simple for both parties. Okay. Um rosanna, why don’t you share with us? What? What is what is it that you that you really love about bringing? The right parties together what really moves you about this work? Okay, we’re fortunate to live in the united states of america where non-profits thrive and that there’s a non-profit so for every mission, every possible issue out there and what what brings me the satisfaction i had for many years and continue to have a client who every christmas donates to annoy organization called oasis in patterson, and the client donates thousands of dollars every year to this non-profits the women and children could have a wonderful christmas, which they wouldn’t ordinarily have. And for me, those kind of matching up people to for a greater good is really what i live for. Ok? And how long have you been doing this work? I’ve actually been doing this all my life, but in my own business for about twelve years. All right, now you contributed to a book by new jersey women business owners. Why don’t you tell people what? My block this week is seven tips for small shop planned e-giving and i want to focus on just the very first one of those seven, which is you don’t have to be big to be successful at planned e-giving lots of opportunity in planned giving for small shops you basically to start with big quests or iras or something that’s, just simple for people to understand and easy for them to execute and that’s very common in people’s lives like a will or like an ira or a pension, and you just encourage people to include your charity buy-in one of those methods, you don’t have to have expertise and sophistication either on your board or as consultant, or even now in your development staff. I just want to break down the the perception and the myth that you have to be a big shop to be successful in plant e-giving it’s just not so, and there are six other tips for small shop planned e-giving on my block, which is that tony martignetti dot com and that is tony’s take two for friday, september twenty first, the fortieth show of the year. Claire’s, of course, principal of the plant e-giving agency and she’s, creative producer of this very show. And this week we’re talking about claire’s cliches. Why are cliches bad, claire? Well, cliches, they’re bad because they’re old and they’re tired and they’re worn out and when you’re a non-profit trying to inspire people to volunteer for your cause, care about your cause and especially donate money your cause then you’re writing should not be tired and worn out. It should be fresh and vibrant and draw you in ok, but these air phrases that we phrases and sometimes just single words that we all understand that is a is a common understanding, even if there may be a little wordy. What’s what’s the problem with everybody, you know, if you’re using something that everybody, everybody grasps easily, well, you know, it depends on every single situation, so in some situations, when you have no time to think and you’re in a real hurry and, you know, a cliche is what comes to mind? Well, yeah, then just, you know, spit it out and use it and if your audience is, you know, inspired by that word great, but for the most part, what i find is that when people do use cliches and these air things like, you know, staying ahead of schedule or, you know, there’s millions of them and we’ll go through a list, but when people use cliches often times it’s just because they were in a habit, right? It’s a habit of using it and a lot of times what it signals to me is that if you’re in, like, a habit of using these phrases over and over, like, make a difference, make a difference, maybe it’s time for something new, and perhaps you need to re think your entire communications system and what you’re doing and what you’re telling people if you’re falling back all the time on cliches and jargon, okay, i assume you would you also would argue for economy of words, maybe using fewer words sometimes to say the same thing. Like you said the example you gave forget which phrases but another one at the present time or something you like. You like it exactly, because tony, think about how most people learn how to write you learn how to write when you’re in school, especially when you get to college so your college freshmen and you have to turn in a paper and the teacher wants fifteen pages. So as you write, you’re just like your so effusive you do just like all these words come out of you because, you know, gosh, i’ve gotta fill up fifteen page if i need to sound smart and important, so you start writing like that. But then when you get to the real world, not that many people are looking for a fifteen page paper from you’re either a five page paper from you, bennett, he needs five words from you write like a really nifty thing on a twitter or facebook or or in a postcard or something that you’re sending to your donors just a few lines to really? Did someone excited about something? It’s, not a fifteen page paper, even a two page paper. So economy aboard is really, really important to sort of change your whole mindset from that writing for writing sake to writing for, you know, being exciting and being interesting and really making your point in in a clear way that paints a picture in the person’s mind, okay? And you’re not being paid by the word. No, you’re not being paid by the word, not at all. A matter of fact, you should be thanking yourself is being paid for the fewer words, maybe you get a bonus instead of getting paid like, you know, ten cents a word instead, you’re getting paid like you know, one hundred dollars if you khun, if you could do it in half the words or something, if you think about if you think about okay, you want you want charity clarity, right? Hey, that’s! Good. I like that charity clarity. Okay, cool. You’re always pointing new phrase change one letter. I know charity clarity school alright. Came up with one the other day with one of my clients at the national wildlife federation and we had something that at first seemed terrible. This thing happened right with the letter we were sending out, and we thought it was a terrible thing. But then, all of a sudden, we realize, wait a minute, maybe that’s. Not a bad thing to think that through. And so the phrase we came up with horror and hope. Of course, i’m a fan of alliteration, ze mean, we’re here talking about claire’s cushions, so horror dankmyer strikes, right, right? Uh, right. So what? You’re gonna run time with something you think? Well, maybe there’s hope in this first you’re horrified, but maybe there’s, hope, horror and hope. Um, let’s. See? So your your interest in this goes back because you’re old radiohead, u did radio journalism? I mean that’s ah, you got to be concise in radio journalism, don’t you? Absolutely and that’s where? That’s where i come from, i’m a non-profit girl through and through mostly and fund-raising especially with plan giving, marketing and that’s what i do now, but my background is i was a in the broadcast duitz business, so i worked in radio news as a reporter and anchor it all news radio station, and i’ve also worked at cnn as a news writer, writing especially on some of the international shows, so but i always like to tell people, is when they say, well, gosh, i don’t think that i can explain our mission, you know, in in three sentences final it’ll go on and do that. I always say, you know what? I think if i could explain the ethiopia eritrea border conflict in three sentences and tell you the latest what’s going on with that conflict, give you some person effective and some background and what’s next, if i could do that in three seconds, if i think we could talk about your food pantry and i love your drop names to national wildlife federation, cnn, you know, so she squeezes those in there it’s but their admirable well, they’re the truth that our revolution and and that’s the thing and it’s details and and when you talk about writing details are actually what make it interesting, because as soon as i say, like i was a writer at cnn, like, you know what that means, like you picture that you’re like, wow, you know, when i see the person reading that on tv and i see the person covering that story, yes, someone has to write that. So when i say national wildlife federation that’s so it’s a big non-profit that you know, that has a has a big old mission. You know exactly what it is. So details are really important and writing rather than a bunch of fluffy. Words aren’t any details? Ok? Charity clarity what i always love about cnn is the people who write the the crawl i always admire, but the you know, for listeners, i don’t know what the crawleys keep myself out of jargon jail that that those words at the bottom of the screen that air that air crawling across and describing you said, you know, ethiopian eritrean border conflicts, but they’re doing it in the twitter space one hundred forty characters or less. That’s that’s really amazing, right? Sort of the original twitter when you think about it long before twitter, you had the crawl across the bottom of the screen and crawl started pretty much with breaking news, even in your local television station, maybe dio something going on, you would see that it would be like, you know, weather alert, you know, tornado warning in effect for these areas so that’s really where the crawl started and then when cable news became all the rage, you know, they started doing crawls to and, you know, think about the crawl right it’s like you’re listening to a story about the economy and business, but then there’s a crawl on the bottom that’s telling you like fifty other things, including the fact that lindsay lohan has been arrested again. So it’s it’s it’s the crawl you khun and she just she just hit somebody in new york city i think just just, she said, but it is always time latto proportion he was just looking for the money. Ok, well, really interesting that you’re non-profit involves lindsay lohan called go for what we were talking about the crawl and we were talking about writing for writing for broadcast and here’s the really important thing that you learn what you write in broadcasting and it’s called the teas and it’s a little thing that you say before you know what’s coming up i hate those damn things i hate that cheez its such a tease in the shadows dankmyer get you to stay tuned. For instance, i just thought someone about about writing teases and teases that’s applicability to toe like facebook and to your block and you know headlines for block to get people to come and read your block to read the post so if you tell them what’s in it, if you say like, you know, unemployment is up sixteen percent, you know, or whatever. Then then you’ve already told them the news and there’s no reason st john to read your blood if you say, if you say, you know, fascinating news about unemployment statistics coming up next, you know, like, oh, god, i need to hear that e i know you’re complaining, but the fact is that work, you’re doing a good job and they were i know i’m complaining because they work, they keep me teased and then what? I really get annoyed with me. All right? I’m so annoyed i gotta send out live listener love because got to counteract my annoyance live listener love staten island, new york welcome international china non jin welcome korea welcome korea welcome china more close to home. Welcome staten island live listener love out to those three as well as we still got california, virginia, new jersey, georgia it’s, incredible, texas okay, i feel better know the reason i don’t like to tease is because it works, but you know, what really gets me about the tease is when they tease it and then there’s the commercial break and then they don’t, then they don’t fulfill and then and then wolf blitzer teases, and then he teases it again before the next commercial. Yeah, that’s, that that is very, very annoying. And i do if i’m going to be teased like that, i want i want to pay for it. And then and then, if there’s no real payoff like if it’s the greatest thing you’ve ever seen, like the greatest video you’ve ever seen in your life, then maybe that’s one thing, but if it falls flat, which a lot of times stories d’oh, it’s like you need to deliver. So let’s, think about that in your non-profit writing. So you have a newsletter and you know, it folded up four ways, right? Put in the mailbox and then it lands on your you know, boardmember kitchen counter with all her mail, and she picks it up, right and and it’s it’s folded over his little piece of tape. So you want her to open that. So if you if it’s really like boring on the outside, well, maybe should not even gonna open it, not gonna open it for days. So the thing is to think about what’s on the outside and that little space that you have right a tease. So instead of saying like news and information inside, well, that’s real estate that you’re wasting writing teams there say, like, you know, what’s what’s, the biggest thing that’s happened lately, you know what? That was totally i just thought of that. I mean, i don’t know what your biggest thing is. So even that’s better than then news and interesting information. You look out the information, look how good clarence c i was ranting about wolf blitzer, and she brings it back to the yurt fund-raising newsletter on the kitchen table so so well, so well, adjudicator so thank you. I know i’m grossly inelegant. That’s why claire’s associated with the show to keep me in. I’d like to give a little shout out to the person who taught me everything i knew and that was built. Torrey william tory who’s, the network newscaster worked in neutral radio news and nbc and everywhere else and is a long time d c news guy. And when i was an american university in the early eighties, i’m dating myself here. Oh, my god, you’re really you’re in college in the early eighties. Oh, my god, i was in college in the early eighties, graduated college in eighty three along with my friends julie malkin and angie column these and these are all people now that work for top notch news agencies, and we were all in the same class together. We were young, twenty twenty one year old students in d c very excited about working in the business. Our teacher was built, torrey. And he came from the business which was so important, because in communications, sometimes you get these teachers that are academics, and they’ve never actually worked in the business. But bill had worked, you know, in news and was probably working at the time we had him and he would say things like the beginning of class you take, okay? Let’s say, something’s happening down on you? No dupont circle. How did you get there from here? And, you know, some of the kids to be like, well, i don’t know i’m not very good at directions, but i would raise my hand and say, oh, massachusetts having to make a left and it was it was really interesting. Way to see, like, who could be a reporter? Okay, that was you. Know it’s, that project stuff, so the writing that he taught us was great, because he would say, just say it. So the classic thing i always remembered, all right, one last shot, and then i got to just say, we got to take a break, go ahead, say it, we got to take a break, okay, we’ll make it really quick with the word used, bill said to us. And i just realized, of course mean, before every break i tease. So i’m a hypocrite. Well, learn. You learn from me. So i helped you build out the show. So i taught you about the cases on the brakes and things like that. But you did teach me that much let’s not get carried away. You talking a few things, but no, he taught me a lot about your hot considerably. Yes, my clock. My time sheet. Okay. So youth, you know, what’s. So what’s wrong with saying we do youth youth development or youth mentoring? Well, i mean, that’s. Fine, if that’s if you’re talking to another person in the nonprofit sector, so say you’re at a conference and you need someone and it’s that’s the easiest thing to say, like, well, you know what is what is? What is new beginnings all about? They see your name tag, right says you’re non-profit beginning what’s new beginnings. Hold over your development agency, that person that works in the non-profit they know immediately what that is it’s shorthand. But now when you’re in the real world, if you meet someone at a cocktail party and perhaps there your next big donor, and they say, oh, well, what do you d’oh? I haven’t non-profit called new beginnings really well, what’s that oh, used development, the person might be like let’s say they don’t work in schools or anything even remotely related to that you’re just gonna they’re gonna tune you out instead of saying, well, gosh, you know, we heat we help teenagers that are really having a rough time, and they come to a failing in school and they come to be of a program where they come every day for two hours and by the end of six weeks there, you know, now they’re they’re getting, you know, degrades and and they all have an after school job, right? A detail much richer. Um and yeah, just you, right don’t write for for people in the nonprofit world because a lot of times, you’re not talking to them, all right? Because, you know, shorthanded fine jargon is fine when you’re talking amongst yourself, and sometimes you come up with your own jargon, like like my my favorite client of the national wildlife federation, we have it, we have a term called block and it just means, like, make stuff like, like, oh, we have this new thing all of a sudden she’ll say what we need to block and that just means we know what that means, it’s like, okay, we’ve got to come up with, you know, like the mailings were going to do, and they were going to write things that were going off. We have all these things, and we already know, like what that means, but i can’t go to someone else and say, let’s, watch, right? Of course, that shorthand that we’ve come up with. Now you have a block post work together, you have a block post on this subject, which has a list of jargon, e words, a big list of words and phrases on we’re going to talk about a couple of them, but why don’t you tell people where they can see your comprehensive list of jargon offenses? Well, i’m i’m a frequent tour or sometimes frequent writer and blogger for non-profit marketing guy dot com, which is run by the marvelous stand kitty larue miller, who was really just a genius, and i tend to write for her all kinds of stuff about the media were related to the media, so i wrote a three part series recently about georgian and cliches and writing more concisely and writing more. In the second post, my most recent ones so titled jargon jargon, we got jargon, we just have about ninety seconds left. Claire meyerhoff what’s wrong with despite the fact that despite the fact that it’s just long it’s long, why would does anybody say that when you, when you’re talking, despite the fact that no it’s just but okay, all right, i might quibble with some of these not that one i don’t really like, despite the fact that it’s funny it’s like they were, you know, these are from bill torrey, my college teacher had these years ago. And, you know, they’re collected from different sources, like the bbc, the ap, you know, put together by some of these teachers at american university that he worked with, like lincoln, ferber and and and all those guys. So these air list just kind of had around, and he scanned them and sentence which is and wonderful service. What if we render assistance to people? What? What? Everything render assistance to, would you say, would you say i was driving down the street and i saw this poor woman and she had a flat tire, so i immediately pulled over and rendered assistance. I would not say that. I would probably say something more like help. Yeah, i pulled over and helped her system. I would even say assisted right, helped helped. Right? And the thing is, when you use long stuff like that, you know, you could put more details in there. So instead of saying i immediately pulled my car over to the side of the road, you could say, like, you know, she was she was down on her, you know? She was sitting there on the ground that she looked so sad trying to figure out daddy is jack. So i came over and helped, so i helped her way have to leave it there.
