I’ve been away with two pre recorded shows in a week, so good to be back here, it’s may tenth, twenty thirteen oh, i hope you’re with me last week, i’d suffer pseudo member nous kel itis if i came to learn that you had missed small non-profits raise more money consultant and author amy eisenstein returned last week. She’s, the principal of tripoint fund-raising and it took her two years to write her new book, raising more with less. We learned that that time was well spent still two years i don’t know this week the money is out there and kayman founder and ceo of new york grant money is a treasure of valuable information about grants, discounts, rebates and other money incentives throughout the country that get triggered when you re new release, move, expand, renovate, we’ll talk about other georgia triggers as well, investing energy savings, she explains what’s out there and how to find it also the ppa latto paul, have you seen? Now, to welcome to the studio and kayman founder and ceo of new york chadband company, they worked to obtain economic grants and incentives for clients in the new york metro area and nationally. Previously, she served in the new york city mayoral administrations of rudolph giuliani and michael bloomberg as head of business development for the new york city economic development corporation. She’s, a former dancer, she was doing radio at twelve years old. It’s my pleasure to welcome to the show and kayman and welcome. Thank you, tony it’s a joy to be here a joy thank you. Most people just say it’s like pleasure refund, but joy that’s terrific. Why were you doing radio at twelve years old? What was that about? I guess i’m a born ham. I came from a family of hams. If that’s still a word that’s used today. Sure. It’s couples fashion. Okay, so you’re not kosher, but what were you doing? A radio it at twelve years old, i got invited to to write and produce and be star of home run write a show in grammar school. And it was just a random opportunity in alexandria, virginia, which is where i grew up. And ah, you know, i just gravitated toward that stuff because of my background and family and interest in all that stuff and things having to do with performing. What was your show about twelve years old? I’m sure it was incredibly insightful and thoughtful and you don’t remember. I don’t remember. Okay, all right, let’s talk about some grants and some other opportunity. I don’t want to limit it to grantspace talk about economic incentives. Cool for for our audience, small and midsize charities. Why are these things made available? The idea is that there needs to be some stimulus at all times. To incentivize organisations to grow and invest and hyre create jobs and really contribute to the economic well being of an area or state a country. And so programs have evolved and exist just everywhere everywhere on the planet, actually to help encourage activity that will contribute to the economy of any given jurisdiction. Okay, so we could be talking about city state this’s way also talking federal level opportunities incentives? Yes, most definitely every layer of government. Rnc va ble has something to offer on the economic menu, if you will, to encourage organizations could be for-profit not-for-profits combination, ah, to invest, to grow to hyre to do all the kinds of good things that really contribute to the economic base, the tax base and the you know, the economic opportunities for people, wherever they might be. On the charitable side are their incentives mohr for certain types of charitable work than other types of charitable work. Not really. I mean, where if you look at the landscape out there of who’s giving and who’s getting, you see activity in social services, obviously elder care charter schools, but also theater, dance, performing, arts, culture definitely as well as health. Services and other charitable and religious for example, institutions, you know, you name it, whatever is on the spectrum on the knot in the nonprofit world there some e-giving thank god going on because organizations depend for their lifeblood on e-giving not only by private donors, but also by public donors. Yeah, and i don’t think there’s great awareness that these programs are available at all different levels of government. Exactly that’s why i have a job. I mean, we started our firm eleven years ago with the idea to bridge that gap because there were a lot of things that are were on the economic menu by federal, state and local government. I mean, we’re here in new york city, but we’re not unique in terms of jurisdictions offering stuff, and there was very little in the way of know how about what was available, how to go get it, how to cut through the red tape, deal with the bureaucracy and really maximize somebody’s return while minimizing their hassle. So our team based here in manhattan is designed tio work through that we we navigate the mazes we say of these economic programs for all kinds of organizations. Large and small. And you have dahna a little acronym for for what triggers these incentives rhyme your r i m e acronym? Yeah. That’s a throwback from when i was studying to be a lawyer. And i used demonic says a tool to study for the bar exam. In a way i could get through the bar. That was what got through that got me through a swell. So i don’t remember. Do you remember any any cool acronyms? I remember ocean, which which are the elements of adverse possession. No adverse possession. Okay, open continuous something something. And no tort aureus was adverse. Possession is when you take over land, right? Yeah. For twenty years, you’ve. You’ve done all these things on a piece of land openly, notoriously continuously all that you can take it over, and you own it, they. But if the owner notices it at year nineteen and a half and it’s a twenty year statute you squandered. You squandered a lot of good time and money. Kind of. But you were trying to steal somebody’s land, so you deserve to be thwarted. Yeah. It’s. A very old legal concept. I i doubt it. I think it’s still used in some situations because you hear about squatters, artists squatting in buildings, loft buildings in manhattan years ago anyway, and that eventually took over ownership because the landlords were out of town. They didn’t care. They let the building’s rundown and artists got to take over whole buildings here night that’s, ocean. But we want about ryan, which you don’t spell, right, but that’s okay, are i am for when we when we trigger these things, what what’s what’s our starts off with our what does it stand for? So rhyme is our renewal lease. I invest in property or equipment or in training staff, for example, m is moving, ieave, relocating, moving from one place to another. He is expanding. Maybe i’m in this building, but i’m expanding next door those of the typical triggers for economic benefits because that means that the organization is moving in a direction which lends itself to contributing to the local economy means somebody’s growing somebody’s acting somebody’s, putting money at stake in the system. And therefore government’s interested in supporting that renewing the lease that that happens pretty pretty frequently. Andi again, i don’t think there’s awareness that just because you’re signing a new, maybe five or ten year lease, that there may be an incentive available for you, exactly, i mean, who knew on again that’s why i have a job, but and in most areas that’s where there are, say, designated zones where economic activity is being encouraged in the middle of manhattan? Not so much, you know, but in other areas you’re talking nationally, yeah, nationally in other areas where you’ve got designated zones, maybe formerly distressed areas, areas that are geared for revitalisation areas that are trying tio, you know, make a comeback, those of the kinds of situations where simply renewing the lease, in other words, re committing to your stake in that community. Khun trigger some kind of economic benefit for your organization. Excellent. Okay, um, we have just a minute or so before we take our first break for a couple seconds, so should you look around for possible incentives? Maybe before you’re renewing? I mean, when you know you’re lisa’s coming to a close because maybe not only if you stay, but maybe if you leased somewhere else, you’d be in the same community, you’d be a little better off. Sure, sure, i mean, the most intelligent organizations look att this was saying, there are listeners are no, they’re there, they’re there. They want to be more intelligent. By definition, they want to get more more intelligent, right? Sure, sure. So those organizations are well advised to look early and look often and consider what their options are before, you know, making a commitment, a contractual commitment, somewhere. We have to take a break for a couple seconds, and when we come back and came and i are going to keep talking about the money is out there. All these economic incentives for you stay with us. Is that the investment? Is that what the eye is in for? Invest? You know, investment i used not in so much in the wall street sense, but in the sense of spending money, capital on plant equipment staff was raining stuff. What if? What if you’re renovating? That’s? Good to accounts. Sure, you’re spending money in an improvement and of space and ah, that contributes to the economy too. Okay, m is moving was that about moving? So this is where jurisdictions get really competitive and it gets very interesting because suppose, you know, your organization has the opportunity to go really anywhere. You could go to china, you could go to california, you could go to arlington, virginia, shout out to my old neighbor in virginia, and so jurisdictions compete to attract those types of organizations when they’re deciding whether to move. Ah, because that could mean the transfer of jobs and investment and money into community from elsewhere. Your neighbour in arlington did they know when you when you were twelve years old on the elementary school radio? I don’t know, we should ask. Maybe they will remember the show if you remember the show use hashtag non-profit radio arlington, virginia if you can remember what an kayman sure with twelve years old and tell us where we’re watching the hashtag here in studio it was my peak. No, i don’t know that this is the peak e i don’t know if you’ve been on oprah or good morning. America. But this is your climax right here. There you go, it’s. All been leading to this moment. Okay. Thank you. Dahna. Expanding. Oh, no. Moving. Oh, no. We get recovered. Moving, expanding, expanding. You said a little about that’s. A little more expanding, particularly in this day and age. Anybody who’s. Adding to their workforce is like that’s the holy grail of economic development right now, because job creation is where government is particularly in wristed in stimulating activity. So i suppose i have ah, small theater company. But i have the opportunity to grow and add set designers and writers and producers. And what not now, that becomes interesting to government because those are represented jobs and therefore, you know, tax revenue. Also, you look at the sort of secondary effect of that kind of activity because those people in that place of work, wherever it is, are spending money. They are buying things. They are contributing sales, taxes and income taxes. And even if the organization itself is exempt from income tax because it’s a charity or educational or non-profit institution, the people who work for it are subject to income tax, and they pay sales tax. And also the organisation uses up energy, so those air costs, which can be mitigated through various incentive programs. And i find that that’s where also currently a lot of interesting opportunities air had in the nonprofit world. Because if you’re say renovating a theater and you have the opportunity to outfit the lights with led lights or something super efficient or make sure your cooling and heating systems are super efficient, then thie utility companies, in addition to government, have many programs available to mitigate those costs. You can actually get cash rebates against that type of spending. Energy efficiency, right? Yeah. I was going to another when i was going to ask you about. And actually something is coming to me. I want to help you with this rhyme. This eyes misspelled acronyms very, very needs. Problematic tim it’s. Pretty lame. That bothers me. Now, if you had r h, we obviously got spell r h y m e for rhyme heat could be heating air conditioning. And that could now that’s little too narrow. I know, but it could trigger the thinking about, uh, energy efficiency. All right, fair enough. Now we need a why? Like what? Do we not have covered training? You don’t really have training. You have it in investing could be investing in your workers. You could have like you train ad h for heat and why for you train you’d taken a little poetic license there, but it works for me. We’ll take that. Okay, i’ll feel better anyway, if we could just do it for the next few minutes, it’ll it’ll ease me. This’s rhyme is very upsetting to me or i am me, um, you mentioned investing in employees and i think there are special programs for hiring veterans. Yes, yes. Let’s. Talk a little about that. Yeah. That’s. Really? Ah, wonderful opportunity. And i wish those programs, you know, were more robust. Ah, in the federal government, there have been programs, too. Basically give tax credits, two employers who are hiring veterans and and the way they have categorized. This is according tio, how long the veteran has been out of work and whether the veteran has some sort of injury. The state of new york, fortunately, has recently passed legislation that says any hiring of veterans can be can qualify for for again tax credits at the state. Level the jobs and the credits really are about they have to be created in twenty, fourteen, twenty, fifteen so there’s a bit of a lag time between when these things can get claimed and also for non-profits those hiring credits not so valuable, right? Because a non-profit is typically exempt from income tax, hence there’s nothing to deduct claim the incentives are against a tax business income tax, right? Okay, in government world, you know that which is tax can be untaxed so often in the toolbox of economic incentives is our are things in the tax code you khun untaxed something, but in the nonprofit world, they’re they’re limited taxes, which an organization might pay. But that being said, there are still taxes that they pay sales and use taxes usually are exempt income taxes, but otherwise they could be paying real property taxes. If they’re in a building that is taxable on, they could be paying energy taxes as well. Ok, on your site, i saw a white paper that talked about for veterans again salary, salary reimbursement. If you hire a vet that does that sound like something that still i think it was a fairly recent white paper talked about salary reimbursement up to fifty percent. For i think six months. Yes, yes. So familiar. Yes, there is a special employer incentive. A subsidy along those lines. Yes. So that’s on the federal level. So that’s for everybody. Um, yeah, let’s, let’s have a difficult time. Your job search mean, they’re often misunderstood and they’re freaking people who think that that is going to freak out on them and, you know, go go ballistic or something. And, well, it says such unfortunate, such an unfortunate, perhaps stereotype and and so untrue. We hired a veteran, a twelve year army captain. Miz? Yes, ms brandi whitlock. She wrote the white paper that i’m referring exactly she’s she’s on the case. So her her research is current and it’s it’s very excellent. And from first hand experience, she can say that boy veterans are eminently employable. She used to deploy thousands and thousands of veterans too distant lands and has served her time for twelve years and elevating herself to captain, working from as a veterans from since high school. And now we’ve been so fortunate to have her on board for the last and she’s been with us now six months, and i’m telling you, this woman can move mountains. She has tremendous discipline and work-life iq, you know, for for non-profits that want to hire vets? I think it was that same white paper i saw there’s something called national resource directory. Okay, an rd dot gov and also recruit military dot com. Excellent. Yes. So if you want to take advantage of some of these economic incentives, is what we’re talking about around hiring vets, there’s, two sites teo that connect vets and that a job seeking with with employers totally. And and if it’s not in that white paper, we have access to it. People can email us for it e mail her to get ah paper she has written about why people should think about hiring veterans and some of the common misconceptions around that. All right, how do we start to research what is available for us locally? We don’t want to keep this to new york, and we haven’t done that. Do you have some resources that you can recommend for people? Tto find what may be available to them in their state, their community, for sure. And so at the risk of giving away some of my currency here, but i’ll do it because you’ve asked so nicely. Usually i don’t ask nicely. In fact, most guests don’t think i do, yeah, so some of my go to resource is thank god for the web, our national databases of grants and economic incentives really primarily directed from the government, the mother of all websites in the united states is called grants dot gov, and that has a comprehensive how to list of out how to register as a non-profit to access ah, government grants, but also the piela and all compendium of all grant opportunities available, whether it’s for health, education, culture, you name it if it exists from the federal government as a grant or economic incentive, it is in there the other thing that i find extremely useful and extremely current, and i’m so proud that the federal government department of energy is even put this together. It’s called desire use a dot or ge not desire your think enough it’s called it’s spelled d e s i r yusa dot or ge and say that one more time. So it again, please d as in david s as in sam i r e yusa dot or ge, and it is the fifty state compendium of all grants and benefits relating teo energy efficiency and renewable energy. So whether you’re a homeowner or you’re a non profit organization or you’re something else, all of the economic benefits currently available in the realm of energy are compiled here. It’s, incredibly current you could drill into every state of the union and every scenario that you could think of to pull up what is currently available. I find it to be enormously helpful, and i can i consulted all the time. I mean, another thing that i think is an overlooked, often overlooked resource. Isa siri’s of grants from the federal government. And they’re about at any given time around twelve agencies that participate in this it’s it’s about innovation in research and development. Grant money. It’s wonderful there. Phase one and phase two grants the program is called sb i are small business innovation research and its sister and companion program most relevant to non-profits is called s t t e r small technology transfer and research program. The federal government gives grants it’s too small organizations ah. Anywhere from one hundred thousand dollars in phase one, five hundred thousand dollars in phase two to help stimulate innovation and research in health technology. Any number energy, any number of areas that the federal government thinks needs attention and these grants are always available. They’re different offerings from time to time. So for example, this month they’re putting together ah, all the proposals that you khun submit in the field of energy and the environment, the epa and the d a we are and then the national health institutes have put up there grantcraft poses that you, khun submit grantwriting and in the stt r program, which is technology transfer, a small business can partner with a with an institution, a non-profit institution, to put thes to get thes grant proposals in i think, at the risk of being political, this is a this is an area where it pays to think about the good things that the federal government does for us in the in the in the in the midst of all the furloughs and the and the complaints about, you know, government being much too big and, you know, you talk about that that very valuable desire, database and all these grants i mean, so no government is not all bad. No, and i don’t think anybody would have been equipped or even interested in putting that together because, you know, what’s in it for them. But that’s, department of energy, you say exact on monday, so you and i all paid for it, so we should use it. And i’m telling you, it’s under wonderful engine thank you for sharing all those valuable resource is your butt didn’t give away the store? I don’t think you did, because these these things that can be complex to apply for sure, right? That’s, that’s the thing i mean, you know, you find the information on the internet, but you really need to do your due diligence your homework to figure out. Is that item actually valid? Is it in place? Is that information current? And then you get into the whole rabbit warren of applying for grantspace benefits, which means you really have to compile lots of information and put the pedal to the metal as they say it’s a lot. Now you have ah, you have a background in dance. And you mentioned your family was in the performance? Yes. And any spillover between that world and your work it ah, new york grand company. Well, as they say, right? All the world’s a stage. So yes, i well, here i am on the radio, performing once again. Well, i invited your not knowing you have ah, have a background, you’re you’re dancing through the grants world dance with grants that’s good. I like that that’s so that’s not actor that’s. I think the first one was at ted, a ted conference and then in ten, the non-profit technology network also had him at a conference, but the one i’ve seen is the is the ted version very provocative buy-in therefore controversial, which i admire. I like people who stirred things up a bit, um he’s challenging some basic assumptions and limitations that we have on the on our charitable sector. What what what’s going on there? Well, you know, i like the controversy generated by dana’s welchlin attracted some criticism, but i really love the public discussion on this it’s the youtube and the ted video generated, i think, close to two million views a month now on it can really change the public perception about overviewing what what dance message was or is his general message was maybe we shouldn’t vilify overhead costs and ratios is something negative in the charitable world, and i think that’s a very powerful and important message to get across now, they’re details in there that i may not agree with and you may not agree with us well, but i think that main message is a great talking point. I pulled listeners before the show, and one of the questions i asked is, what do you think of dan? Pull out his vision of amore free market charity sector and fifty percent said it’s brilliant and i embrace it, and forty percent said he raises some interesting points and then the others either didn’t care for it or didn’t see it, but ninety percent either love it or i agree with sounds like with where you are, you know, he raises some very valid points for for a provocative discussion. Yeah, and that doesn’t surprise surprise me at all, you know, i think, however, and talking is a lawyer when we look at some of the rules that are involved, what then maybe saying at lee duitz initially is we need to change public views rather than laws unnecessarily that that limit some of these things. Although he’s launched if you read his book, he’s launched a campaign that will protect the non-profit sector against laws that might limit things like how much you spend on fund-raising as well. So that’s, where we start to get into a little bit more of the controversial stuff and maybe things that don’t resonate as much as compensation, which i think resonates with a lot of people in the nonprofit sector that feel like, you know, if you’re a non-profit executive, you maybe feel like you’re taking a discounter, you’re under compensated for what you might be making in the for-profit world, gino, i have ah clip of his i don’t have a clip for all the five challenges that he issues. And we’re going to talk about them, but i do for a couple, and i have this clip for compensation here’s what he’s essentially saying and we think of this is our system of ethics, but what we don’t realize is that this system has a powerful side effect, which is it gives a really start mutually exclusive choice between doing very well for yourself and your family, or doing good for the world to the brightest minds coming out of our best universities. And since tens of thousands of people who could make a huge difference in the nonprofit sector, marching every year directly into the for-profit sector because they’re not willing to make that kind of lifelong economic sacrifice, we’re talking about limits on compensation, and you and i have talked about this before, but not obviously not in this in this context. What, what what? What are those limits that we’re talking about? Well, the compensation under federal tax laws and state laws may apply as well say that if you’re a charity and you’re going to compensate your executives, that compensation must be just unreasonable as to the corporations so you can’t pay excessively and what? Is excessive is sort of a matter of all the facts and circumstances, but generally we look at comparable than they are, they’re comparable charitable organizations typically, although you can use some other organizations as well toe look at comparable, but are are you within the range of comparables that other organizations they’re paying under similar situations for similarly qualified people with similar responsibilities? So that makes it what we’re really looking at, but that makes it hard than to compete and to go it forces everybody to be at roughly the same level you can’t create a huge incentive by by offering fifty percent more than the comparables yeah, and i think that’s why it resonates with so many people, but i would sort of make everybody aware we’re paying our college football coach is under this standard as well. So there’s quite a bit of room in there for a really, really high compensation that we’re talking about big organizations or institutions like like private universities, well, they confined like a smaller scale. We’re probably not that worried about, you know, compensating smaller organizations where they’re really excessively paying they’re executive directors because that’s very, very rare just under the circumstances, a smaller organization just doesn’t have thie economics t justify that that type of compensation, unless they’re being used inappropriately for, you know, founder to compensate himself or herself way really rarely see that that overcompensation problems, but okay, but that’s, because there’s a big uh there are big disincentives and penalties if there is over compensation, right? Well, i think that’s partially the case, i think the vast majority of charities want to do a good job and served there been intended beneficiaries, so they’re not looking to overcompensate their executives unless executives are providing that return benefit that’s going to be felt by their intended beneficiaries. I don’t think we really get to a problem of excessive compensation, and less boards are using the organizations to pay off often insider and the charity is really running for private interests rather than public interests, and i think there needs to be laws against that, right? But that’s what? You and your finding that that’s quite rare. Well, yeah, i find it quite quite rare when charities are on the up and up about this. There are cases, though, and they aren’t as rare where charities are. Being misused for for the purposes of their insider. Okay, i i pulled listeners on this compensation question. Do you believe charity ceos should be paid comparable to corporate ceos if the organizations and challenges are similar and half said yes, and only about fifteen percent said no, and then there was a bunch of some explanations, which are i’m not sure i have a chance to get to but half think think, yeah, i mean, if the job’s a comparable pay the people comparably well, i don’t exactly agree with that, but what do you think? What do you think, tony? I do agree. I think that a cz long as we can have justification for why the why? The why? The salary is appropriate. The person you know, here she brings enormous talent or connections or, you know, has has had a big track record of success. Then i think it’s okay to go outside the comparables in the community. Why? I think you know that part is what resonates with everybody in this sector and why everybody’s cheering dan, or at least fifty percent according to our poll or your pole but here’s, the problem is that for-profit they’re not really limited to the compensation they can pay, they’re executives on dh public companies are there’s a little bit of an exception in there with security flaws that are involved there, but for the most part, for-profit compay whatever they want, teo executives now non-profits were given the same standards and allowed to go up to that level, then there could be a lot more abuses of about individual charities, even though i think even still the vast majority of charities would not misuse that compensation tool, but with a few bad cases, the media jumped on it, and then public confidence in the sector dropped. Yeah, i was afraid that there’s not going to be just, you know, attraction of mohr individuals into the non-profit sector, which is great toe open up the talent pool because more people khun khun, vie for these jobs that are paying a higher salary, but i think you know, the negative influence on the sector and the public trust, maybe mohr of ah, a detriment to the sector than the individuals that were attracting let’s go to another area that he challenges us on advertising and marketing and his concern. Is that the public doesn’t like to see donations used for advertising, right? Yeah, and i think you probably recognize that somebody who’s been involved professionally and fund-raising as well, tony, that that that donors may not really appreciate high advertising costs, although the impact of those advertising costs maybe very powerful dan is experienced with his breast cancer, walks, a bicycle rides, but there are some some concerns there as well. I mean, the legal rules that might be involved in that we’re not allowed to use charities, uh, to promote the private interest except incidentally, in furtherance of our public interests or our mission. And if we spend so much money on advertising instead of programs, that might be an indication that we are operating the charity for the benefit of the commercial fund-raising organization. So if just to give you a ridiculous example, if ninety cents of every dollar you donate to a charity was spent to offset the advertising cost, do you think you to donate? You know, even though the church may have got ten cents that it wouldn’t have otherwise received, i don’t think the public is going to be happy about that, and even if there were no laws prohibiting something like that, i think there’s a problem there if it occurs year after year after year, with a ninety percent overhead like that, ok, well, but that’s an extreme example, ninety percent right? And the money that you do devote to advertising could be used to increase scale considerably. As as you know, as dan describes in his breast cancer walk charity yeah, and that’s where i, you know, absolutely agree that we can’t we can’t just take a look at overhead and even look at it on a one year, two year, a three year basis and judge of charity based on that, maybe a seventy percent overhead would be justified for a couple years if we’re building up to scale a massive campaign and educational effort, there would be the question about whether the cost is actually overhead or programmatic in terms of educating the public as well. So that’s, really a lot of variables involved, but i think you do need some laws again to make sure that, you know, i don’t know if you received these calls, tony, but there used to be some some abuses here where? People would phone your residents and say, you know where charity that’s affiliated with the policeman or the fireman, you know, please loan it to us. A lot of times, those were run by commercial fund-raising companies that were taking ninety percent of every dollar, and the charities were not really exercising any oversight over it because they were just getting ten cents of every dollar that they would never have seen anyway. I can tell we’ll follow it up next month when you’re back, because it’s too rich topic teo, i think just covering just one segment, the next area really is is taking risks. What? What? What’s ah what’s dan pallotti is concerned there. Well, i i think dance concern is that non-profits are not taking any risks. We’re too stuck on the status quo, and that doesn’t allow us to scale the solve some of the big social problems, and we’re not getting anywhere by not taking those risks really important theme, i think that’s resonating throughout the sector i pulled listeners on this one is your charity or one you’re thinking of to risk averse in achieving its goals? In other words, would it have more? Positive outcomes in the long term if it took greater risks, fifty percent say yes and twenty five percent say no and then others had some comments. So fifty percent, of course we don’t know if it’s the same fifty percent of the time, but they seem to agree. But what is it in our by-laws gene that’s? Ah, putting a cap on risk taking well, there are a couple things. The first is the board’s duty of care, so they’re responsible for making sure that the use of the charitable assets are properly used to further the charitable mission of the organization and they have to use reasonable care of what would call and i’m scared of getting into jargon jail, but an ordinarily prudent person in like circumstances. What the hell is that? So it’s the average reasonable person who’s in charge of something like their own business? If they think it would be reasonable, expend their money in a certain way, then that’s permissible, right? But thea average person not not the adventurous, not the average adventurous person. Yeah, because you’re not using your own money, but you’re using charitable funds. We’ve got certain laws that prohibit you from being sort of wildly speculative, but there’s a really important, a sort of distinction to make first is you can’t breathe pretty speculative if the activity you’re investing in is completely in furtherance of your charitable purposes. But if we’re just talking about a revenue generating activity just like a fundraising event but not necessarily a new form of research for breast cancer, for example, but we’re talking about investing on a fundraising event. Now we’ve got a duty not to speculate and that that’s usually under state laws. So we’re supposed to not speculate wildly here, and they would be like investing just all of our reserve assets in one stock and sort of betting that apple is going to go through the roof instead of sort of pausing to think. Well, what if what happens if if apple stock doesn’t go through the well, let’s, focus on what you just said. You can speculate if it’s directly related to your mission. Yeah, you can speculate on a new program that that might do very well in advancing your mission or it might not. But that program is directly related to your mission. It’s not just the fund-raising program okay, yeah, all right, sure, but and then you, of course, you have the the board and, you know, we’re going back to boards tend to be conservative, and then you’ll have donors that, you know, we don’t we don’t talk a lot about failure in the charity sector and and if there isn’t a willing to fail, latto says, as you know, prohibiting failure is gonna kill innovation. I agree with that one hundred percent, yeah, of course, i mean that’s like an equation, yeah, but you’re going to have these prohibition if they’re not legal prohibition is going to have these sort of traditional prohibitions on risk taking and among your donors and maybe even among your board, yeah, and it’s a matter of educating our donors and especially hard board members to invest in that. So we’ve got to invest in educating our donors and boardmember so we can invest on innovation and tolerance of failures. You’ve got something in california unique, teo non-profits there that prohibits this kind of risk taking that puts a limit on it any way you want to say little about that. Well, in california, they’re special rules on how you prudently invested your income so again, it’s just a rule that says you may not speculate and mustn’t said, look to the permanent disposition of the funds considering the probable income as well as the probable safety of the non-profits capital. So if you want to invest in buying a coffee shop, you know that may not be a prudent investment if that’s where you’re putting all your money, even though there might be a very high upside to it. So, you know, it’s usually risk and return are related, and if you’re going to go high risk to get that high return and it’s purely and money investment, well, that’s going to be subject to those laws, if it’s a programmatic investments, then you’ve got some leeway there. Okay, now we don’t really have time to talk about the next to so we’re going to we’re going to hold those off dankmyer latto talks about time horizon and and attracting risk capital by sharing prophet, you and i will talk about those next time so let’s, spend a couple minutes. What would you like to see change, jeanne? Well, i’d like to see that i think the biggest point that that i made in the beginning is that overhead has got to be seen by the public first, something that’s not necessarily evil, overhead or high overhead if it’s used to build scale if it’s used to build solid infrastructures and systems, maybe a very prudent thing. I think in the for-profit world, if you’ve got venture capitalist looking to invest, uh, in some new business, they’re not going to want to see an organization that spent xero on overhead structure that business because it’s goingto say, well, that’s built on a really shaky infrastructure, you know, and maybe a foundation of straw that could collapse at any moment in the future just by going cheap now. So, uh, looking at overhead in and of itself is just a really bad way to judge organizations, and i think that’s the biggest message, maybe the secondary message is toe look att compensation and say, hey, we’ve got to be aware that the next generation is coming in often times with a lot of college debt, and if we want to attract people who have really good hearts into into the non-profit sector and there may be, you know, dirt. That month non-profit sector leaders as the baby boom generation starts to retire, we’ve got to really take care to make sure that that our compensation is reasonable enough for them to not have this luxurious life unnecessarily but have a reasonable life, especially in metropolitan cities like new york and san francisco, where it’s really expensive to live and i gotta factor those things in we have to leave it there. Hello and welcome to tony martignetti non-profit radio it’s that time again. Big non-profit ideas for the other ninety five percent i am your aptly named host. I very much hope that you were with me last week. Yes, i do, because last week was lead and matching gifts in your campaign to start professor john list from the university of chicago, chairs the economics department and founded the science of philanthropy initiative. There no longer must fundraisers rely on tradition and conventional wisdom in campaign planning because he shared a rigorous science to guide you around lead and matching gif ts also many matching corporate gif ts chuck longfield, chief scientist at blackbaud had lots of simple ways to increase your matching gif ts from corporations did you know that volunteer hours are also dollar matched by many? We started with sector benchmarking, and we went from there, and my interview with chuck longfield was recorded at blackboards bebe con conference last october this week, some raise money while some raise hell. I’m talking about women in philanthropy, with marshals to panic. She was founding editor in chief of contribute magazine and is the new media adviser to the new york university heimans center for philanthropy we’ll talk about limbong coleman leadership roles, traditional giving and how women are organizing themselves also, pinterest and slideshare amy sample ward returns she’s, our social media contributor and membership director of non-profit technology network and ten she shares how small and midsize non-profits can reap definite value from these lesser known social sites between the guests on tony’s take two, my podcaster on top i’ll tell you what i’m talking about, and i will thank you, my pleasure now, to welcome marshes to panic. She is new media advisor to the n u heimans center for philanthropy, and she also curates its annual speaker siri’s philanthropy three point oh, which explores disruptive innovation in the social good sector. It sounds like some organized anarchy. Anarchy pointed in the right direction. She teaches social media strategy. Yes, it may very well be totally okay. We’ll get teo talk about anarchy. I’m still trying to introduce you. Hold on there, marshal. She teaches social media strategy. You have a very lengthy bio. I was to get through this a cz well, a social enterprise. New media and cause video in the masters program at new york university she was, as i mentioned, founding editor in chief of contribute magazine, her upcoming book swarms. The rise of the digital antiestablishment published by little brown is due out later this year. And it’s actually because of that book that she couldn’t be in the studio because she’s interviewing someone for her book swarms very pleased to welcome marshes to panic. How are you? Thanks so much, tony. I’m just really delighted. Honored to be on yourself. Oh, it’s, my pleasure to have you. Thank you, marcia. Honored not too many people say that. Thank you. I hope you feel that way by the end you believe i’m sure you will. You believe that women are reshaping philanthropy? How is that what’s happening? Generally, you know, i didn’t use teo buy into claims that women somehow we’re you know, very different behaviorally and men in terms of their capacity for compassion and their willingness and generosity. But there’s some new research out and it’s very much triggered buy-in just in the economy and structural changes in the workplace that have given women a little more income over the last ten, twenty years, and since nine eleven, we’re we’re starting to see some measurable differences in the way women spend money in terms of the charitable contributions that they make, so that there are some differences that are starting to emerge here. There’s certainly other differences to in-kind of what those new income numbers are spawning in the non-profit industry, but armored and okay, and we’ll have time to talk about those, so you feel this is mostly economically driven? I think a lot of it is economically driven in terms of just the numbers with regard to the money uh given and how that those contributions different, for example, in the highest e-giving levels of people who give generally men and women, uh, baby boomer aged women are more likely to give them their male counterparts in all giving levels three percent or more, or they’re coming down to charity among people who do that. Male baby boomers and older, single headed households are nearly two times it’s, likely than men to give to charity. So that’s that says an age when most women are saving and have significant savings and disposable income and that’s even happening even as a result of women not getting paid is most statistically on the average than men. So it’s pretty significant. Okay, but there’s also interesting developments around organizing and advocacy. Yeah, very much so because of some of these economic trends, but also as a factor of globalization and particularly social media, technology and internet technology in general, we’re seeing some behavioral changes. First of all, it could be a simple as ah ah lot more charities targeting their solicitation campaigns more directly. Tau women. I know a lot of your listeners. Now, united way has now one hundred thirty seven women’s leadership councils that have raised something like nine hundred eighty five million dollars just over the left twelve years creating marshal those those leadership councils are our volunteers. They’re volunteermatch women supporters, yes, and doner groups. So what the united way has done? Uh, kind of piggybacking the general trend and women’s income and changing numbers and how much they’re spending on charity decided to tap into that trend and organize some of these councils. Teo, do more engagement around women’s not only volunteerism, but something like fund-raising as well and what’s. Interesting about that is, uh, this so called tiffany circle, which is an all female. Network created by the red cross, for example, another organization, uh hey has been started not just by the transport by social media networks that have popped up around some of these activities, so a lot of places they’re using a combination of social media and these economic trance really bolster their fundrasing activities, and we’re gonna have a chance to talk a little later on about women organizing themselves, not needing umbrella organization to do it. But, you know, around some of the controversies, like what happened to komen and rush limbaugh’s comments, and so we’ll get a chance talk about women organizing themselves, as i said, not even needing that kneading the big organization, but just coming together on the social sites let’s talk about some of the social change and social enterprises that you’re seeing women engaged in. Yeah, they’re concurrent with these other changes on certainly partly a factor of economic wealth. Growth among women is that a lot of women, particularly on wall street and other very in the financial services field, are really being a critical force behind the creation of pretty much a majority of social enterprises that are out there. The skull. Forum for, uh, global entrepreneurship has done on international study on this and seeing that at least half it’s not up to as high as seventy percent, and some regions of the new enterprises that have been started have been done by women, women who have earned independently of their thousands um uh, who are seeing that the needs community isn’t as fully developed as it ought to be around new issues of concern to these cohorts, such as women’s, self esteem, women and girls, self esteem, women, education issues. Now, these air getting much more focused thanks to a lot of the social enterprises on march for-profit businesses for good, if you will, that coming online. Also seeing a lot of female boomer women burned, creating films, getting into the social good film space and making some very interesting documentaries that are here about women helping women and trying to move the needle a little bit on education and their film initiatives that are also being used to raise a lot of money for certain non-profits abigail disney surely johnson, some of the big entrepreneurs are involved in these things on there, really successful in terms of measuring impact. Are there? Are there specific documentary titles? You khun you convention for us? Yes. Uh, shirley johnson made something about kicking the ball, which is about women’s basketball group. We’ve got abigail disney was working in liberia. Um, we’ve got some recent documentaries that are are being funded by again the women run fledgling fund, which is a foundation, and it’s about women and girls in the slums of calcutta being turned into activists and it’s a very compelling story. Uh uh, all sorts of new films i’m attending here to see for the first time i’m in washington, d c today as well, and i’m interviewing for the book as well as screaming some films that american university conference on social media that matters and this is focusing, i’m still making efforts. So again, you couldn’t you couldn’t be in the studio because you’re in washington, d c watching a movie that’s what you’re saying, i see a film, they have probably hard working the minute you’re seeing argo and lincoln, i’ll bet that’s why you’re in washington? Because they’re not playing in new york anymore, okay, we have just a minute before a break, so i don’t want to really get into anything brand new, too deep. But, of course, you’ll still be with me after the break. When and i want to make sure that what listeners understand, we talked about social enterprise, we’re talking about often cos right, that air, social, socially oriented, social good business is sort of. We’re talking about socially, social good enterprises that have been begun with the primary purpose now so much of raising money for stakeholders, but for raising the bar on social impact wielding an impact that’s measured first of those companies over organized to be accountable to those kinds of and our wii just very briefly before break, we necessarily talking about corporations or these could be not-for-profits also, these could be not-for-profits for-profit non-profit hybrid organizations and then for-profit organizations, but it’s the way that they’re organized on around what they promise to deliver, i understand what their outcomes are, not not necessarily one hundred percent profit, if there, if their profit mathos lately, okay, we’re going to take a break and when we return, of course, after this marchenese to panic stays with us, and i hope that you do, too, talking alternative radio twenty four hours. Marcia yeah, let’s, let’s, talk a little about the a new organisation called the girl effect they have on there on the opening page of their website that what they say exactly, that women are the most powerful force for change on the planet. You what do you think about that? No, i got this. Let me say that hyperbole is shared by by because i was wondering how about even like, like men, maybe i don’t know they’re not a good food what’s interesting about the girl effect, though, is kind of the structure behind it, and we were just talking a moment ago about social enterprise and so forth. What the girl fact represents is is a really progressive and very successful partnership. Example of great collaboration in the do gooder space between the noble foundation, which is run by the bucket children warren buffett’s, kids corporation, nike and it’s ah it’s foundation arm and ah partnership with hundreds of non-profits that have it’s part of their mission statement helping women and girls to achieve change, whether it’s in the education space of the art stays or healthcare. It’s a partnership where ah, a very good shorts film was funded, its animation, but it basically finally connects. The dots taking it from hyperbole to show why funding women and girls projects actually affects everyone ah, and affects everyone in a very local way. And so it’s in a very effective messaging tool that kind of breaks through the the problems that a lot of these issues had had in the past, where it sounds awfully one sided, the girl fact does a wonderful job of making this ah, great messaging, peace around thie economic impact on everyone of the lack of educating women and girls, and some of the status around the world. Dahna uh, the lowly status love women hold around the world. So it’s it’s a great burger, and what it does is it kind of lends this little short film to a lot of organizations that couldn’t otherwise afford to make it and lets them put on their websites and interface that helps them to raise micro cash, you know, ten dollars, twenty dollars, right after people to do the film online, they’ve done ability, teo, donate to some of the causes that have been vetted. And though it’s just a wonderful campaign that is now finally being copied in other parts of the sector so we hope to see more of that kind of collaboration in the future. In fact, we’re seeing a lot of micro giving among women organizing themselves around social enterprise. Yes, we are a aa lot of this thie evolution of social networks, social media still relatively, very new, but as people get together and now they found each other online and now they exchange, you know, kind of information about the trivia are the important bits of their lives. Now, the next evolution is the first getting people together to make change or around certain issues folks i care about and what we’re starting to see is on what we saw a lot of last year were the social network, some of them that are very strong, many of them led by women being able to make a difference, either in defense of, uh, an action taken by an organization or to bring up some concerns that hadn’t been brought up otherwise and holding some of these traditional non-profit organizations accountable. And, of course, the the leading edge that was the komen foundation controversy where coming foundation had decided to be fund-raising goods breast cancer testing on dh without telling a lot of its membership, and when it finally freaked out, a lot of folks got online a lot of women and started protesting thiss was an example of women organizing themselves through the social networks and very rapidly yes, absolutely, and it was a very successful protest, and it wasn’t so much the significance here isn’t so much whether you believe that that decision was the right or wrong one it was looking, and there are social networks out there holding traditional organizations and non-profits accountable for their actions and ways that has never been before. And the rapid response of some of these networks to some of these decisions has really encouraged a lot of organizations to start really getting serious about engaging your supporters and their networks in new ways so that everybody does feel that their part of the decision making process and there is a new level of accountability achieved not only holding organizations accountable but individuals for there flippant and ah antagonistic, i’d say, remarks rush limbaugh, when he accused you really accuse nobody eats cited a law student was a prostitute because she wanted funding for birth control to be included. In health care and there was a huge backlash. Yeah, there was an internet firestorm over that in just three days. That firestorm was ableto porcelain about to apologize, not once but twice to the woman he had called a flat was the one of the quotes, okay? Ah, and he lost nearly one hundred advertisers right in that in that, uh napor so we’ve seen that these swarms, if you will, of the social networks that have been highly developed and that have a riel sustainability to them, are able to work very quickly when they’re organized. One of my colleagues, a friend of emmett has called these accountability networks actually because they’re social networks and they are always there, but they can get into action very quickly. Uh, if one of them are influential, members of these networks decides to call them into action. So it’s somethingto watch it’s a phenomenon now, but it’s becoming replicable, and we’re seeing a lot of this kind of action over. Yeah, and so this is what you’re calling swarms of women in this case and it’s not women, are not the only ones active actively engaging but that’s that’s the third today, but one of those air swarms saw another one very well done stop sopa campaign, but to delay a vote by the u s congress that would diminish him internet freedom, at least for now. And, uh, it’s, really a new form of activism that is used social media to coordinate swift action around the specific goal. And it’s it’s it’s significant because it’s, uh, much more to do with the ability of new players and the advocacy sector toe work collectively and successfully kind of outside the non-profit sectors long established structures fired-up alternative goals. So it’s it’s something that all organizations want to start infusing more with their supporters in new ways but also so constructively trying to really be able to prove that they’re having an immeasurable impact. A lot of donors now are saying, what have you done for us? We’re the cause lately, and a lot of organizations are now using the social media tools to measure impact, or at least to get a more specific numerical handle on the work that they are doing so that they are able to not only convince people of their value, but to be able teo create partnerships on new levels to achieve more social impact over time marchenese to panic is the new media advisor to the n u heimans center for philanthropy, and her upcoming book is will be swarms. The rise of the digital anti establishment, and you can follow marcia on twitter. She is at claw cause pardon me at cause global ah, marcia let’s, let’s focus a little more on the on the actual, more traditional e-giving and the way women are being more generous essentially than men, it’s a it’s a little more about that. Yeah, even though women in general are earning less than men and have less money in retirement and are generally outliving their spouses, these recent studies on their standing for charity demonstrate that young women, certainly, and especially boomer women, older women in particular are just more likely to give and to give more to charities and then beyond that, there’s, also a behavioral that women in a recent survey by indiana university also said that they they want teo uh, not just have more impact on spending. They want to be more involved in the decision making and indeed, a lot of the rise of some of these new organizations on social enterprises, uh, is due to women wanting to bypass, too simply writing a check to existing organizations but setting up a kind of a bee metrics around specific initiatives that they themselves want to see. And as long as they have the means and some of these new networks, especially on wall street and elsewhere, to accomplish that, they’ve been racing to set that up. That slowed a little bit during profession, but still a very vital force. A lot of people are saying that this income situation for women and this this habit of giving mohr, especially among older women, is very likely to continue. By twenty thirty, for example, fifty four percent of american boomers will be women. And because of their sheer numbers and the social changes that have occurred as they grew up, they have a significant impact on society through their beliefs and attitudes and behaviors and have us already. And so now, as they get older and more charitable on dh, i think we’re seeing the start of some more further behavioral changes among women towards charitable organization. So i think that’s a little bit of good. News you said earlier that the social networks are relatively young, but i hear people say how sick and tired they are a facebook or or twitter sometimes are these are these social networks with us forever? I think some forms of them are, and certainly is they morph and evolve our use of them well, morgan of all hope, the more distinctive things about social networks and social platforms that we’ve seen over and over again is that the people using them tend to define how going tio improve them over time. Ah, facebook, for example, everybody’s kind of getting organizations on facebook now so much personal things now that but seeing how they used them toe left bitch events and, you know, do pr in a different way, certainly, uh, we’re also seeing a rise in the use of private social networks, kind of a private facebook that go under certain names like ning’s o r other certain other platforms that are being set up so that it’s kind of like a private, charitable, uh, type of facebook that’s membership only on some organizations and non-profits they’re using this to great effect, one in particular is the provocative understand veterans organization? Marcia, marcia, you broke up a little bit, say they say the name of the organization again. It’s called i a v stand veterans iraq, afghanistan veterans association a okay, i look, they’ve dahna they set up a peer-to-peer private social network, uh, that bear as long as you’re in that network, you know, they don’t want this isn’t like vietnam veterans or korean, more veterans for eighteen, nineteen, twenty year old folks just and this particular war and are facing some very unique challenges, thanks largely to the health care technology being used to save them from injuries that in previous years killed and so there are unique challenges for them coming home and a lot of challenges always for veterans coming home. So combined with their existing use murcott given their age and their experience before going off to war ah, they are very successfully putting together these private networks is veterans to talk to each other, and they’re subsets like women’s subsets like people who were injured from a certain type of injury and you get on them by giving a password. You are pre qualified so you you it’s not just anybody, is not your fourth grade teacher finding you it’s a private conversation that built trust and credibility among the members and as it moves toward a membership model it’s also proving to be a very sustainable non-profit kind of model using social networks to serve those in need buy-in involving an engaged, those in need not just writing checks, marcia, just just a minute or so left, i have to ask you, what is it you love about this work and the and the research that you’re doing go how people, uh, can hold power accountable in new and constructive ways. I love how this technology couples to be advocacy sector e-giving voice teo so many more people who otherwise were not involved. These full social media, the, uh, the internet has democratized philanthropy, and in such is turning traditional organizations on their beer. I think it all about here. No, no, no, you’re you’re you’re pretty good about it. You’re quite good were very conscious of jargon jail amy’s here with her little field notebook it’s, an adorable little yellow forty eight page notebook. It’s branded from the state of texas. I don’t know. What were you in texas lately? Is that where you got your little fuel? No. It was given to me as a thank you by a friend, david jnf, who lives in austin. And i don’t even know why he was thanking me, but he gave me this little field notebook and it’s the perfect size it’s about phone sizes, let me ask you, you have co authored or contributed to five books by my count, when you’re going to do one on your own? Yeah, i’m hopeful that maybe that one is next, okay? And then there’s none of the like, you know, trying to interpret someone else’s edits like, for better or for worse, i could just come out of my brain and we’ll see what happens. It will be very, very much better. We’re looking forward to the solo effort, but we’ll celebrate your book coming up. In fact, i’m going to you’re going to one of your book launch events, which we’ll talk about later on act for the end later this month for those who are in the new york city area, but right now we’ll talk about pinterest and and slideshare um, how did these how do these fit into social change and social engagement? Well, i think that they’re really great examples of platforms that actually have tons of use, but organizations haven’t, for the most part translated how individuals air using that tool to how they as an organization would use it. You know, facebook’s pretty straightforward, you have an individual profile, you have an organizational page like you know, how to get started. But with these tools where there’s there’s, no difference between who the the user profile is, organizations are a little bit more, you know, without boundaries, there’s too many options, so they don’t really know how to engage. But organizations that have tried or are using the tools in part of their content strategy are really seen engagement there. I don’t know which one you want to talk about for just let’s talk about why don’t you explain what pinterest is? Because maybe so little known to some people that they don’t even know that exactly what it is? Sure, so pinterest is free to use social platform just like facebook or anything else where it is free to use, but that means you are than the product on and it’s very visual driven so it’s all about collecting on a pin board that’s virtual, just like you would maybe, you know, in your office pictures, recipes, anything on the web so whenever you pull in a block post, whatever images associated that block post would be actually what people see on your board, they wouldn’t see the block video also yet exactly. I have a pin board for women leaders of non-profits excellent on video, but it’s video zoho contributor of them speaking so just a quaint listeners that video can be as well. And then what you’ll see on that pin board if it’s videos would just be a screenshot, right like this still like you would when you had a youtube page and the video isn’t played ok? Yep. On dso you, khun, even though you have this pin board, you can actually have unlimited pin board, so maybe i have a pin board for conferences i want to attend, but then i also have a pin board like the most frequent one i see is recipes that i’m going to cook one day, but i’m never actually gonna cook like that whole sentence isn’t the title, but it’s like recipes and you know this person’s never cooking next i wish list. Recipe list. Exactly. All right. So how are charities? Engaging? Constituents were around around pinterest. Yeah, their organizations have you. Know, as you can imagine, tried different things, short campaigns, longer standing content and something that’s interesting, and i know you have the links to some infographics to share on the block. Pinterest has about eighty percent of that content is repent content. So anyway, you know, if i went to your pinterest board say, if it was the average boring, you know, think about hypothetical i would never i would never dane never squander my precious time with tony’s interest account because of pin boards are so mundane and superficial and dull, but if you if you stumbled on it buy-in accidentally, you clicked on it stumbles away there. Um, eighty percent of the content across pinterest is repent, meaning someone else pendant first, and you’ve just, you know, reposted on your on board, so but like you said, you’re, you’re bored that’s all about interviews with non-profit women leaders, i’m sure that you were the one that did that interview are or were some of the original? Yeah, so they’re going to show up all over pinteresque, but it’s because you were the source and so thinking about that at, like, how much content is shared amongst the platform where is very little of that content for people? Time is spent clicking on things, and i’m going to read websites. You know, i think organizations naturally think, well, this is, you know what has put up a bunch of great images to our website and we’ll drive a bunch of web site traffic, but that’s not the case, people are using the platform within that within the place. Yeah, so eighty percent are re pens? Yeah, that’s enormous. Yeah, do you have a corresponding stat for any buy-in a chance for twitter. How much of twitter is re tweets versus i? I don’t have a twitter for tumbler, which is a more similar platform to pinterest because it’s ah it’s like blogging but it’s much, you know, micro style and it’s about nine out of ten temblor posts are re blogged so it’s very similar in that way where people that are on the platform or just, you know, following each other and finding great things and it’s more a matter of like, i want to have the best curated recipe board versus the on ly recipe board, you know, so it’s it’s much more shared eso organizations are taking advantage of that in different ways. One one example that i really like. Because it’s very clearly aligned with the mission is city of hope, which is an l, a based a hospital research center, etcetera. They have a campaign called mushrooms for hope because mushrooms are shown to have really great health benefits, especially for people at risk of or with cancer. So they have a mushrooms for hope board that’s. All great ways, you know, recipes to use mushrooms, because we know everybody in there. Mom has a recipe board on pinterest. So why not, you know, curate all those different ways to use mushrooms so that people will re share it again in the platform and ultimately it’s, not about them knowing who city of hope is it’s about them eating mushrooms, right? You know, but they’re using that for exposure exact recipe sharing community. Exactly. Here’s a great super great cream of mushroom soup recipe. Right. Very smart. S o just to make it explicit. So people follow your boards, right? People can follow your whole board. They could also follow just you. And then whatever board here pinning tio, they could get those. Notifications or they could just never follow you and find your your pin through someone else, you know, and then see, allow just a great mushroom recipe, you know, and then click through. And actually the original post was was from your account i love those clever ideas that yeah, that shit’s a smart one. Yeah, another example of maybe not a specific example, but a way that, oh, our strategy for charities to engage on pinterest yeah, a different take on that that i i think is on interesting one is n w f national wildlife federation has a campaign for, you know, getting outside and and has a big, like camping go the great outdoor camp. I’m goingto mess up the name of their campaign, but so they have ah, aboard all about that where they’re pinning other people’s content about campaign so it’s not even their content, but again, it’s it’s making those people in the community that are talking about the campaign feel like they’re in the spotlight because this is a board of all those other people talking three national organization has exactly exactly bored or my my my pen? Yeah, exactly. Engagement. Yeah, exactly. Two way street let’s. Talk about slideshare. Sure. Because always shoot. There was something i want to ask you about. Interest. It’s, overwhelmingly women. Yes. I see different statuses. Somewhere, anywhere between two thirds tow. The mashable said maybe it’s this high is ninety seven percent. So somewhere in there, overwhelmingly women. What should we be capitalizing on that? What should we be doing with that? Yeah, i think part of just to address the point, you’re making that all the numbers being a little different. And part of that is if it’s actual user sign ups versus active users and again, different platforms in different data. Analysts consider active user as, like logs in once a month or is on it for an hour a day like which one of those is active, you know? And once you get wherever you fall in that active definition scale that’s where it starts skewing much more women. So actual user accounts are a little bit more typical of social networks, but the active is much more female. Okay on. And so i think organizations can take advantage of that in those are, you know, the examples where two shared but also just remembering that, you know, even like marcia was saying women want to be making the decision of where money goes, women want to be, you know, figuring out the causes that they care about and engaging with them, so figuring out ways that isn’t just, um, you know, a generic call to action for everyone, but you’re figuring out, what are the the women boomers in your community interested in doing? And maybe it has it it’s not, you know, all about city of hope and all about all of the life saving measures and research ugo but it’s about mushrooms, you know, and you like, let that be the thing for them? S o i think really, figuring out who your community is back to some of the stuff we’ve talked about in previous months and then focusing really specifically and letting them either drive that content and you’re just re, you know, you’re collecting that o r just taking their lead? So slideshare is ah ah, platform, where you can post content that you want to share and it’s called slideshare because it’s it’s most prominent feature is posting slides like a power point presentation or a slide deck that you would be using in a, you know, at a conference are in a board meeting or whatever for count for mac users, or use kino exactly like, you know. And then i translated over the power point, exactly little little parenthetical for mac users. Or what does whatever google aps calls there? Oh, yeah. Anyway, so that’s that’s, the most dominant features people posting slides and you can find them and review them and share them. But you can also embed them. And so you could post slides from your conference and then on your blogged have them embedded so people, you’re not just having to write out what you said. You khun embed it right there and people can flip through the slides. But what’s great is that you can also use it for all kinds of content. So do you use your organization? Is part of your new campaign launching, you know, with an infographic about why you’re running this campaign? Well, you could upload that info graphic, you know as a pdf or whatever to two slideshare embedded in your block. Have people share it just like they do. Slides and track track the shares that way. Okay, you know, if you wished you could also use that info graphic on pinterest. Exactly. Okay, on dh that and you know that goes for all kinds of other content. Maybe you have a new orientation, you know, to sheet that you give to your volunteers, will. You could post it there and then also post slides that you’re goingto review with them of this is how to be a volunteer for our organisation. This is what we do, this is why we have volunteers. This is what the volunteer job looks like, and that way you could just send them those two links they don’t have to download anything they don’t have to, you know, have have any special software, whether they’re on the phone or they’re you know, on a computer they could read or digest those materials ahead of time, show up and be ready to volunteer, and you don’t have to be emailing large files were about exactly top box or some other bright, just a link exactly. Now i’ve so in a few places slideshare called youtube for slide shows. Yes, it’s not as anyone here is popular as youtube. Well, yeah, definitely not as popular as you tube in that when you look at youtube stats, basically, you would think humans do nothing but watch youtube video that there really is a ridiculous thing. So so slideshare has about three billion views a month, so that’s still sized amglobal yeah, yeah, and and i think something social. Engagement is not just in the numbers, though, right? And i think something that’s interesting as faras actual of what the numbers say is that of all of the different social platforms facebook, youtube, whatever slideshare is foreign away, much more popular amongst business owners, organizational leaders, you know, executive level staff of different kinds of organization. So hyre go ahead. So i was just going to say, you know, if you want to make sure that you spent a lot of time preparing something for some funders that you were going to meet with, you know, you made the slide deck showing them who you are made it really clear the impact you make. Why not post that for free on a platform where other, you know, leaders in the sector could come across your sides and say that’s? Exactly. We’ve been looking for someone like you to partner with exactly, and what i was saying, slideshare is owned by linked in. Yeah. So not surprising that it’s i guess it’s gravitated toward business and you can you can embed slideshare content in your personal yet or your or your organizational linked in page yet? Yep. You khun just connect them on dh from from your linked in profile, and it’ll even just automatically pull in your most recent slides or uploads, you know, if you were doing something else so all a very easy way to embed large what maybe large files? Because especially if you’re doing power point or keynote and you have video and or there’s photos in each slide yeah, very large, you get those very large files other other ways, you know, just ask you generally other ways that charity’s could be using slideshare or other tips that you have for for engaging through slideshare well, i think that the training is really what what i’ve seen organizations do well with most often is there already creating training materials, whether it’s for volunteers, it’s for a certain department, you know, and using slideshare is away too. Put those up there, how’s them for free, you know, think about it like youtube, where even though you’re goingto use that video for your campaign or in your marketing and you’re going to embed that video on your website, you’re still going to post it on youtube so that all that organic traffic that could maybe come across it can still come in. And so posting those materials about, you know, the great things that you’re doing with social media at your organization and here’s, you know, kind of your overviewing training materials than other people that are interested in either your organization or social media in general could find that come to you and say, great, i want to get involved with your efforts, so i think thinking about it as the place you know, like youtube, where you, you how’s the content even though you’re using it elsewhere because you still just get the benefit from the other platform. And as google and other search engines index the the content that’s in your slides, it’s, sort of a wayto ona ona niche because you’re you’re slideshare going too, so dense with key notes that are just i mean, i’m sorry keywords that are necessarily embedded in there because it was part of your part of your presentation. Yeah, way of sort of owning a very narrow niche that your expert well and it’s it’s great for search engine optimization, you know, they’re one of their three highest sources is organic google searches so if i am, you know, working on a proposal for these are the five strategies for ending homelessness in new york city, and i’m pitching this to some thunders, and i want to find you know what? I’m going to start a coalition post it there because if someone else is looking just on a search for how do we end homelessness in new york city? Get out and communicate positively welcome to tony martignetti non-profit radio coverage of the next-gen charity conference two thousand eleven. We are at the tribeca performing arts center in downtown manhattan. With me now is sharon abila. Sharon is the author of mixing it up, the entrepreneurs new testament talk about some of her entrepreneurial success ideas and how those probably very well translate to your work in non-profits oh, and maybe some of her positive communication techniques also. Sharon abbott, welcome to the show. Thank you, tony it’s. A pleasure. Pleasure to have you, huh? Let’s, talk a little about some of your entrepreneurial success ideas with the with our audience of small and midsize charity leaders in mind. What what’s? The first thing you’d like to share. Well, what i truly believe is the better connected and non-profit is better that they will do. I taught entrepreneur skills for over twenty years to small businesses. And i would bring in and non-profit to every group that i had. And at one time, i had twenty two different groups with twenty two twenty report people in every group. I teach people how to be philanthropic to teach him to get back to their community, and what i found is the skills of the entre piers needed were the same as the non-profits needed, so i talked on how to get out in the community, how to get volunteers to work with them, how to engage other people so that they didn’t have to do all the work and how they brought in aborted director who was more proactive rather than a board of directors by name. So that made a huge difference to the non-profits ahs well, as one of the thing that’s really hard, especially when everyone perceives the economic times being as bad as they are is that people are tired of all these organisations putting out their hand just expecting a check, and so they need to get something back. And so i created all these different programs there fund-raising activities that are fun that people want to participate in that make it much easier for a non-profit to get their budget back-up where it needs to be to be self sustaining and they don’t have to work this hard so they couldn’t have ah. Lot of them do got tournaments, or they might do silent auctions, or they might do a single stance. I did a big band dance for easter seals one year i did, it was a costume party. We kind of did it like a old victorian kind of party where everybody came in as a character in the victorian era. Very themed events, right? And that way, people, they really feel like they’re participating more in the non-profit rather than just here’s a check, you know, i’m done well, let’s, go into some detail about let’s start with you mentioned getting into the community. What ideas do you have specifically that non-profits khun khun execute? Well, i know in california that almost every non-profit thinks that they just need to join a chamber and then once they join the chamber, they’re done. But the activity that they have in the chamber is actually the important part, not just joining the chamber. What would you like to see them doing? They need to be on various committees like if they were to volunteer for ambassadors. The ambassadors have to go out to every business, right? Shake hands, what you’re doing and people used to ask me, oh, you work for the chamber is no, i’m just out here helping the chamber get better known what they need to have happen in the community, and then that brought mean, more business, so i thought, well, if it works for me, it’ll work for anybody, and it does. So if non-profit goes out and they just find out from all of the different businesses what business needs and then takes it back to the chamber, their face, they’re non-profit so that’s a great way of becoming very active when they’re all trainers have fund-raising bones where non-profits can actually be feature so they could be part of the but how about beyond joining the chamber and being active in that way as an ambassador? What other advice about getting out into the community? You know, all of the leads groups that are out there, i used to run my lines with let’s, say, it’s, a business development kind of organization where people get together on a weekly basis, which most of them do, and they have coffee and everybody talks about their business, and they said this what i’m looking for this is what i have to offer so there are business leads group, and you can find them listed in the business section of every paper there’s, a website called am city dot com that list all of the business events that that are all around the country. Ok, everyone wear you just search for new york and you’ll find the in sample is going to see francisco baizman i think it’s probably the times here, but in san is a journey. So you know, it’s one of those so am city dot com and you can see every event that’s going on every week, so if you go out to a very so let’s say, you meet twenty people this week, one out of twenty will either be somebody that will be on the board, active in the community, help promote non-profit helped organize a fundraiser. Somebody in that twenty people is going to be involved with that non-profit interesting. You really want to see non-profits getting out into the business community first. First things we’ve talked about so far been making those business connections, not staying within your within the non-profit committee exactly because he wants the money, why stay? In a community where everybody knows when you go out into a community where no one knows who you are and they’re the ones who have the money, right, let’s share one more idea getting that non-profit out there most non-profits don’t realize that they can do a speaking circuit rotary lions. Quanah is all of those kinds of social organisations, and those organizations do kind of quirky things like if you talk out of turn your find a dollar, you promote your business and return to find five dollars. Well, that money is allocated to helping non-profit so if every non-profit were to go out to one of those once a week and literally their morning, noon and night, you goto seventy a week and not run out of him in a year, and so you go out to these organizations. You said, this is my cause this is what i’m doing. I need your this is why here’s, the result of what happens when we get out, they literally right chats on this spot, and i know there are a lot of these groups just in the new york area you mentioned a bunch of different professional association. But rotary isn’t there’s a rotary in every county, probably in one box there’s six you go well i know that at least one in every county. So this’s a big area right? There are a lot of opportunity plus you mentioned all the other membership organisations lion lion’s, alanis, optimus professional business women e women network really? When you look in the paper you think when i had a travel agency in nineteen ninety one justus the gulf war was starting i went out morning, noon and night six days a week and i built a travel agency from thirty thousand a month two, three hundred and seventy five thousand a month in three and a half years by doing justice so it was all handshaking and getting to know people and making sure that people knew who i was even though no one was traveling with so i hit it at the worst time but managed to build my business in a way that nobody else had ever thought they didn’t spend a dime on advertise you just had transit costs to all the meetings i’m joking you know, i think the point is very low cost plus it should be fun for executive director seo’s mean, they should be enjoying being out in the community in the business community, talking about their work. That’s. The biggest issue is people have fun when they’re doing something that they’re connecting with people. And when these organizations see how much fun that you’re having, they want to be more part of it. So when when people are making, oh, would you write me a check, or we, you know, we’re short on the budget? Could you help us out? It’s really kind of gloomy, and people don’t like being part of that, so you make it funding it, changing, talking alternative radio twenty four hours a day. I’m gonna guess you have advice about hiring, so bringing people to your organization and that starts the top, but he actually even applies to the board hiring, hiring the top. But what advice do you have about bringing people in and making sure you get people who are going to be passionate latto love the mission and the innovative thinkers way hyre these kinds of people, you know, i think one of the hardest things for non-profit is inviting people into their board of directors who actually have the connections, and that will make a difference for the organization. So there’s, a lot of people who are semi retired retired and they volunteer for non-profits but technically they don’t have the contacts and they don’t have the ability to go out in the community and start helping promote other people. So if a non-profit were to look at what your database like, do you have social media contacts? Falik what experience have you had with non-profits before? What were the results treated? Just like a job interview? So don’t take anyone on your board unless they really are bringing something to the table. That’s a huge issue there’s a lot of non-profits who just think, oh, so grateful you’ve even ask to be born or sometimes it’s way desperately need a lawyer or an accountant, so we’ll just take the first one that we that we get introduced to and we end up with just somebody who’s just brings that skill, but nothing mohr related to your to your important charitable work, and they might think that they save, you know, ten thousand a year on legal cost, but they lose one hundred thousand year by not having the right person connected with the non-profits so that’s really important that they look at, you know, what is the cost? Buy-in yes, of what a person is bringing to their nonprofit organization, right? So that’s, excellent for board recruitment. How about about hiring employees within the organization? Would you like to see ceos and executive director? I have been speaking where people are unemployed for over twenty years, and i am surprised because i have a little blank card and i have them right on their what would i like to do most of anything now that i don’t have a job? And i would say twenty percent say that. They want to work with non-profit any fashion, some even say that worked for free just so that they can beat heart of that community and giving back. When a non-profit is looking for an executive director, that person better be a network. They better be the horn shaker. They need to be up to date on technology, open minded touring, different fund-raising concept instead of the same old, same old thing. Because what work five years ago does not even come close to working today? And so they have to always on top of what the technology is. We heard this morning how text messaging is so important because the thirty year olds are now not opening email and even, you know, ten percent or everybody in the world only opens with that was that aria finger still about texting to e? J just had her as a guest before you came on, and i was talking about actually fifteen and sixteen year olds motivating them, and she said, you know, get them where they are text, right? Saving forty, two hundred messages a month for sixteen year old girls or something. Yeah, right, exactly. So you know that’s. What keeping up with technology will do for someone is always looking at what else can they do? Most non-profits don’t have a log that’s a big mistake, because that who in the non-profit you like to see doing that block duitz in the name of the executive director will be in the name of the executive director because that builds the relationship with the person who has the most visibility in the community and the most visibility and on able to make decisions for the non-profit because a lot of times you could have someone else write it in the office, but it should be in the name of the director let’s talk a little more about hiring now we’ve talked about the board, what on what the board should be looking for in the executive director. What should the executive director be doing to make sure that he or she is hiring the right people that are going to be supporting? Well, i think the skill set is going to depend on how much the non-profit is doing in the community. So if if it’s just administrative work that’s one thing that’s easy too, but the biggest give back in a non-profit is the person who has that innovative ability to figure out how they can use technology, how they khun reach out into the community, draw more people in there’s, there’s so many different things, like most people don’t realize that you can actually go to a restaurant and say, i haven’t event coming up in thirty days, and almost every restaurant will say, because you’re non-profit will donate a lung, right? And then what i would do is i would package twelve lunches and have it lunch for a year and auction it off, you know, and just simple little things like that if you have people who are willing to go out, do things like that hey, back, that employee ends up paying for their own sour, and when we’re in the hiring process, how do we make sure we’re getting somebody like that in our the questions i think would be, how do you feel about being out in the business community? Are you comfortable picking up the phone and talking to people you don’t know? You know, what would you do in a situation where we need to create a new event? What? Would you do? What would you suggest? How would we go about creating and see how people are created? There’s also facial recognition technique, and i teach a course it’s called about face, and it actually helps means clever figure out what your face tells me about how to communicate with you, but also how well you communicate with other people to someone who has a larger bottom lip is a good listener, right? It’s great if you need to listen, but if they’re the person who has to be out in the community speaking, you want them to have a larger offgrid all right, we’re going to talk more about this very, very short that just want to remind listeners that i’m with sharon abbott at the next-gen charity conference two thousand eleven in new york city. Her latest book is mixed. Is this the latest mixing it up? This’s just been revised by have eight books. Okay, we’re giving credit to this one because it’s related to our topic it’s mixing it up, the entrepreneurs new testament and you’ll find sharon abbott at sharon abbott dot com but you need to know that she spells her name s h a, r y and and two b’s and two teas and labbate and then dot com. So i should just sell the whole thing out instead of pieces. Sharon and then a. And then at the end, there’s two teas, and then after the others to be. How do we know you have busted a sharon abbott dot com? Someone who’s. A good listener has a larger lower lip. How does that why is that true? Well, back in aristotle’s time, in the fourteenth century, he began this whole study. It’s called physiognomy and judge jones in nineteen thirty five. Jones in chicago started looking at people who were presented to him in his courtroom. And he kept the law and he would have guilty. Not guilty, not guilty. And according to the jury’s findings, he was ninety percent accurate based on looking at someone’s face. So i took that information. I thought, wait a minute. What if we could use this for communication styling? So if i look at you, i know that you like it when people get to the point. You want people that you’re looking at me now, they should just e i like it when people get to the point based on what makes you draw that concern your nose. But how does a physical feature convey personality? There’s a science to it? This is actually the society of reading your face, so i know that i’m going to get to the point i’m not going to talk to take the long way around, so i’m going to actually say that she’s, right? But i think i’m a patient listener also, i don’t want your lip is larger on the bottom, then the top, so you’re a really good listener almost twice is good at listening as you are speaking and you know you’re good at speed, so the difference is all ego now blushing to what it was blushing cheeks metoo means you could still feel it must be some downsides. Where show me something, tell me about something that i’m shortcoming. Well, let’s say i needed to explain a project to you. The squareness of the bottom of your chin tells me i have to get to the point, which means i can’t tell you all about the details, but also my nose conveyed that to you to ration, but there’s there’s this point where you’re going, i don’t want to know how you’re you build it. I just want to know when it’s going to be built and so people who have a need to explain every detail will get very frustrated because you’re looking at and go, you know i’ve got things to do. You just tell me what i need to do, and we’re done. This is embarrassing now, because she’s sizing happens there’s a pretty accurate this is not like fortune telling this’s she’s going anything. Is there anything else? Oh, absolutely. All right, one more go ahead. I’m getting paid now don’t think this is actually quite insightful. This portion right above your eyebrows is now for radio listeners she’s putting her finger in between my eyebrows right in between her. I’m i mean, we’re not there’s no contact. She says they happen. There is no physical contact at all. It’s. Unbelievable. So this tells me that you like information in order. So you want to give me this first, then this then that in order. But i pluck my eyebrows. So if i had one morale straight across with that unibrow, not in style. No, this is the logic. This is, like minus flat, right she’s again, she’s. Talking about the space between her eyebrows and the forehead. Right? So i have a logical personality. You have a logical personality. So you really want things in order? First, there’s. A lot of people who you’ll see it’s just totally slanted back. Those people who they understand process, and then they immediately know how it applies to the long term physiognomy is the physiognomy, okay, that’s, the practice and google physiognomy and sharon abbott as well. We’re going to go off this now, but that was that was that was pretty much on point. Yeah, i didn’t disagree with anything. You just told me about myself. I learned something. Okay, let’s, talk a little about your, um, your positive communication technique since we’re talking about the way people like to communicate and your judging this by there by there face what are some of the positive communication techniques that people should be using? Well, i think it’s really difficult for a lot of people to stay civ in what i believe is a perceived economy. Now, i cannot argue with the numbers, you know, we do have the highest unemployment rate of this time. There are fewer people donating to non-profits, you know, you kind of get point. So how do we actually project a positive attitude when we know that this is on everyone’s mind? So my attitude is no one came along, scraped up all the money and locked it up, and they’re not magically waiting to the day that everybody says, ok, we could take the money out now so where is the money? It’s just moved, so when we’re communicating with people and we start thinking about all right, so what do i have to do to be that person that somebody wants to give, what they have allocated their ten percent toe a non-profit communicating in a positive manner instead of we need money, we need thio raise his phones. It would be when people are involved with our non-profit these this is what we’re giving back to, and the long term benefit for you is so it’s turning something around, you’re saying the same thing, but in a positive manner and making the person that you’re talking with more comfortable with the idea of being involved. So the simple technique, but it’s phrasing, how you actually phrase what you’re talking about and allowing the other person. So this is where this comes into play. If you’re talking to somebody who has a larger upper lip, you make sure that they have more than enough time to talk. Oppcoll let’s, let’s give an example of phrasing something positively that that in a positive way, we do that, that someone wouldn’t be well, take a negative and make it sort of a positive people could understand making this positive communication give me a negative. It’s i’m cold rooms cold. I’m too cold in this room instead of saying i’m too cold them and that’s an easy fix starting now, let’s, let’s put on a sweater. You don’t put on the jacket, you know let’s, move a little bit. Start getting your blood moving a little bit so that you can actually be warmer dahna but let’s say challenging one would be i called all these people and no one’s calling me back. Dahna right? And that happens a lot. You know, when when i’m actually very business oriented, which i think makes a big difference. A lot of people get into non-profit and they think it is not for-profit and non-profit have to be profit minded, so they have to know that they’re making more money than what it costs him to run the organization. So i do things like i make twenty dials. I know that ten people answer the phone. I know that if i leave five voicemail messages on ly one person’s going to call me back, is it worth my while to return those calls and call somebody who doesn’t call me back? So do i look at the possibility? That that person is out of town busy, you know, family things going on and then call them again anyway. So my rule of thumb is you take a situation where somebody nobody’s calling me back, i don’t know what to do, and then they get into that funk. So how do you turn it around? So what i found is that for every organization there is a time a day, a day of the week that has the best return, so i call on monday morning at nine o’clock i’m not likely to get the right people that answer the phone because they’re setting up their week. They’ve got their sales meetings, whatever is going so i know that if i call thirty, people are kind of wrapping up their morning and they’re getting ready for lunch if i call it one thirty they’ve just gotten back for lunch. They might be late back from lunch so there’s these windows of time ten to eleven one, two, three and i know that monday’s not the best day in friday’s, not the best day. So if i make my calls tuesday, wednesday and thursday then i’m gonna have a much better ratio if i can improve my ratios even ten percent, then i improve my bottom once. So why not treat a business like a non-profit as a true business and actually track what we’re doing having results so that we know that if this isn’t working, we have to sure and start doing something else. Most people keep doing the same thing over and over again, and it drives them crazy, right? The definition of insanity, but they don’t never realise all need to do a shift. What it is that they’re doing so that they end up having better results. We have to stop there. Sharon abbott, one of her eight books is mixing it up. We’re talking about secrets. What is the this securities and exchange commission data? Well, there’s a lot of very interesting data that we can look at as non-profits to try and find some potential new donors for us as well as maybe some people who are current donors that we just didn’t realize are connected to public companies as corporate insiders. So let’s talk about corporate insiders because i want to make sure that everybody really understands what that is. We hear so much, i guess, in the news about insider trading and it’s always, you know, portrayed in a negative light, and that means that people who are corporate insiders have done something illegal with information they have as as insiders. But basically, if you’re an inside, earthy defines you as falling into one of three categories, you’re either one of the top officers of the company, usually there’s about five, six, seven people around that number listed. You are one of the board of directors of that public company, or you just happen to be a person or an entity that holds ten percent or more of the outstanding stock of that company. So if you fall into one of those three categories, you must report all of your trading activity in that company to the securities and exchange commission. And all of that data is public knowledge. Okay, so insiders have to file with the company’s about there their holdings within the companies that they’re insiders for that’s, right? And then also, public companies also file with the sec. They must right. Right? Right. So, i mean, you know, the information can be found if you happen to know that a particular process effect is connected to a public company as a corporate insider, maybe they sit on the corporate board of that particular company. You can actually go to that company’s website. And typically the tab that you would be looking for in a company’s website is called investor relations. Ok, for the companies themselves do have the data. All right, on course. We can also get it from the sec. But before we go further let’s, keep it. Let’s, keep each other out of jargon jail. Let’s. Make sure everybody understands what is a public company. So a public company is a company that is has issued stock and its trading on the market. I guess the most famous one that we saw go from a a private to a public company recently with facebook. Right? So, prior to that, all of the information was private. Uh, no. No information had to be released to the public about salary information att saturday. Other compensation data. But now that they’re a public company and the public now owns shares of that company owns part of the company, they have to be able to report all the all the goings on all the various pilings about, you know not only what the corporate insiders were doing, but obviously all the data related to other financial information for the company. Okay, it’s, the difference between privately held on dh public that’s. Right? Ok. So what kind of data can we find about? About what we’re interested in the people, the insiders. What kind of people? What kind of info can we find? Well, the interesting information you confined if somebody is a top officer at the company, you confined their their salary and other compensation data, and they actually have charts of that data going back over a three year period so you can actually see whether they’ve had what their big salary wass what commit other compensation that they might have maybe bonuses, etcetera? Um, really key? I think teo looking at this data is stock ownership because very often a non-profit especially if they are in, say, in a capital campaign or an endowment campaign mode where they’re really looking for major gift, i’m trying to get a gift of appreciated stock, a supposed to getting a gift of outright cash from a particular donor could be very beneficial, so, you know, just understanding whether or not you have people in your own fund-raising database, whether or not they may be one of these corporate insiders who khun gift you stock, that would be fabulous to know. And, you know, the screening companies can help identify that for you if you’re not able to self identify who those corporate insiders are in your database, okay? And there could be other there’s other stuff that’s disclosed as well, like all their their fringe benefits and things right, which can include insurance policies, that’s, right, all their employment agreement. You know, you’ve heard of people who have these golden parachutes, right? If they’re released from a company. So all of that is actually outlined in these particular employment agreements eyes that maria, i’m sorry is the agreements themselves or public? So, yeah, they they actually will say, you know, if this person is terminated, thiss personnel will be subject to earning x number of dollars, maybe even shares of stock upon their termination. But i’m just curious, can you actually see the language of their employment contract or that i don’t see is the language of the employment contract, but within the proxy statements which is filing statement that this information is contained within that’s where you would find really that the juicy, the meat of it all that if that is of importance to you, if you have somebody who is, perhaps, you know, a corporate insider and maybe, uh, you know, has just been let go or will be let go, you can actually find that information was just like looking i would if i could see people’s employment. Contracts, but now just some juicy details. Yeah, exactly details, no other juicy details that i like pulling out of this is also bios of the dads, the entire board of directors of, ah, of a public company, so it’ll give somebody’s age. So right? Yeah. I mean, you know, you do plan giving tony, so understanding whether or not somebody is maybe perhaps even a prime planned e-giving prospect based upon their age that’s disclosed in this statement you have a bio that would contain where they’re currently employed other corporate boards that they sit on so very often i’ll read about bio, yeah, within a corporate proxy, and then i’ll realize, oh, i didn’t realize this person also sat on another board of directors, so their insider over there, too, right? So then that makes me, you know, have to, you know, then i know just from that key piece of information here’s, another area i need to explore as i’m doing my prospect research that they may actually own, you know, significant shares in this other companies, right and it’s, just to remind people that in a way that you might find that someone is an insider. Because you might not know it is setting up the google alerts, the free google lorts that you and i have talked about a couple of times in the past, if you have those on your major donors, then information about them and the company that they’re an insider for we’ll come right to your rage. Your inbox? Yes, i think it should you know why? Because when they have let’s say i maria semple, where a corporate insider, maybe i sat on the board of directors of the company. I just used to use me as an example, but now you’ve learned yeah, point likelihood of that ever happening. So so even test really small it’s not even worth it. You’ll start using one of your other regular control, anybody but me. Yeah, you’re much better off if you have much good or likelihood of being inside. If i traded today in a public company and i were a corporate insider, i need to let the know within two business days. Oh, wow. Yeah. So, you know, from a product you know, as a prospect researcher it’s. Terrific. Because you know that if you’re looking at particular filings, you will be able to see whether that person has how much stock they have within a two day accuracy period. Okay, that’s. Incredible. So, yeah, well, all of that came about, you know, and because of the recent financial meltdown, et cetera, in the early two thousand’s, but there was definitely some new laws that went into a fake into effect under the sarbanes oxley act. And so they ended up saying, okay, you know what? You used to have a longer period, so let us now. Now we’re shortening it two days since you mentioned plan giving earlier something else you might find out about his people’s retirement plans with the cup with the company that’s, right? That’s, right. So might give you some some idea there as well, whether or not they’re gonna have maybe, you know, a significant amount of money that they were going to have to do something with. So, you know, why not know about that? And be prepared to have a conversation with them? So we have just about a minute and a half before our first break. What? So you mentioned the proxy statement. That’s. One thing that has to be filed. That’s filed by the companies or by the insiders, those air filed by the company’s once a year, once a year, they’re filed with the securities and exchange commission. They’re known as to other things actually notice of annual meeting of shareholders. You might see it turned that way, and then everyone of the filings that the sec has has a number and the number that corresponds to these this particular sec document is called death. D f like frank death fourteen a and that’s filed once a year by the company. Okay. And those air all the different names for the proxy statement? Yeah, yeah, i mean, they’re they’re known as all these different things. But if you are on the website, you’re actually looking for form death fourteen a for that particular company again. It’s on the company’s website, though, is well. Ok, now we have just about thirty seconds before before our break. There’s there’s annual and quarterly statements also, right? Yes, there are. There are definitely annual in quarterly statements and they’re they’re more related to significant happenings within the company related to really financial goings on of the company itself as opposed to individuals connected. To the company. So for the most part, that’s, the type of information that they’re going to file annually quarterly. Okay, we have to take a break when we return. Welcome back. I’m glad you’re still with us with a cracked voice cracks again again, like a thirteen year old maria, just briefly. What are the seance? Isn’t important to know the file. Name the names of some of these forms. What do these annual and quarterly statements called that people will be looking for? Well, if you’re looking for those quarterly and annual statements ten k and a k or those statements. But there are others that i think are even more interesting in terms of prospect research. In addition to that proxy, the death of fourteen a there’s, something called a form three and a form four. So form three is is the initial report that is filed by insiders as of the date that they become an insider or a beneficial owner of stock that will lift their holdings as of that day now, i would’ve thought that would be formed one but that’s not forme one yeah called form. Okay, i don’t want confuse people, all right? It should be for more that i find very interest. Sting is called form for, which would show any changes and holdings anytime that insider buys or sells their insider, stock and that’s the form that i was referring to that actually has to be filed within that two day period of that stock chance transactions. So let’s say there’s an example. Maybe a proxy filing may have been done and say, april this year for a particular public company. And here it is the beginning of september where researching this particular corporate insider if we only go on the data that was filed on the death of fourteen a document that proxy and it’s going to show this stockholdings as of april twenty twelve um, there’s a lot of time that has passed several months. Did this person trade any stock during this time? We would like to know what their their holdings they’re still the same or not. So you would be looking particularly performed for to see if that person actually made a trade in stop between april and september, and then on the form itself it’s going to show you whether they border, sold more stock, and then how many shares that they hold at the conclusion of that sale? So let’s say the conclusion of that particular transaction. I still own ten thousand shares. Of that particular stock, i can go on a web site that shows, you know, market activity. Boone is showing, you know, what’s going on in the stock market and get a general idea of how much that stock is worth in that portfolio. All right. You mentioned the corporate website under investor relations and investor information as one place to find this data where else the government has its sec has its own site. Yes, the sea, which is dot gov does have a database called edgar free edgar’s. So that is definitely something that you can use. Teo, look for the information and using the website or even going to the corporate website is free to d’oh. Okay, edgar, i had always heard of edgar, but i didn’t know that it stands for electronic data gathering analysis and retrieval. Yeah, that isn’t that smart of the is in that little clever of the sec. So they should have make a retrievable info analysis. And there would be maria. There you go. You should have maria get rid of edgar and replace it with maria way. Just have, like we just have about two minutes left. What are other? Sites where you can find this, even though we’ve already identified some free ones. Right? So a fee based site, actually, one that i myself subscribe to because i do so much of this type of research is called ten k wizard dot com and that’s actually part of the morning star document research of companies. So it used to be a stand alone, and now they’re part of morningstar. So ten k wizard, i find to be really useful. Their lowest subscription is roughly four hundred dollars a year, and it enables you to i just like the output of the data. I like the fact that i can put in an insider’s name, and it will show me every place somebody is connected to a corporate insider to lead me directly to the filings. And i can see a pdf copy of the filings. So it’s it’s just a quicker way. So i would suggest for anybody who’s really going to be doing a lot of this. You might want to consider a subscription service. Okay. Oh, really? They just worked. Works better than the edgar site or going to the companies. You know it. I think it. Just points to a lot of information very quickly, so as opposed to trying to sort through the information on the corporate side, etcetera, teo, sort through, say all the form four filings that exist on a corporate site to just see well, because it’ll just say form for, you know, and say the filing he’ll need to try and figure out what is this filing related to the person that i’m researching right now? Yeah. So, it’s, just the way you go about the research, i think it just becomes a little bit more efficient on some of the paid resource. Is maria simple is the prospect finder. My guests are terry billy, assistant director of advancement at the hudson river museum. Wendy adele, executive director of yonkers partners in education, and lisa rob, executive director, the new york council on the arts ladies welcome. Thank you. Thank you. You have all three of you and thank you for taking time on a busy conference day right before lunch on we’re going to get youto lunch. Don’t worry, you won’t be late for lunch. Your subject is working with, uh, boards of small organizations. Lisa, why are boards of small organizations different than boards of larger organizations? Well, normally boards at large organizations that do a fair amount of fund-raising it’s a given and planning and very kind of instrumental involvement with the board, but less so on a volunteer basis or operational basis. Smaller organizations tend to have closer relationships to boards in terms of really what they’re doing for you and it’s also more difficult for them than at large organizations to get some of those things done. So you sometimes encounter at a good small, a good board in a small organization, tremendous work ethics and tremendous alignment with the mission because it is more of a struggle to get to some of the resource is that the larger organization board sort of inherently have. Wendy, why don’t you just set some context? Explain what youngers, partners and education is about what’s your work. We are a public education fund that supports the yonkers public school district for an independent organization that works to increase the number of students in yonkers who graduate from high school and completed postsecondary program. Okay, and now terry what’s, the specific mission of the hudson river museum, the hudson river museum is a history, science and art museum, providing opportunities to brought in the artistic and cultural experiences for people in the hudson river region. Okay, lisa wanted to explain what your work is with counsel in the arts. I’m the new york state counts on the arts is an agency of new york state government, and we work for the governor and receive our money through the budget. Process from the budget enacted every year by the governor and legislature. And we distribute thirty five million dollars of public funds to about fifteen hundred organizations, of which eighty percent have budgets of under seven hundred thousand small organizations. Tony let’s, dispel a myth that you have to be with just a few minutes ago. Boards of small organizations are not necessarily small board know they can range anywhere from thirty five to seventeen or fifteen, usually not less than that. And do we find the same type of diversity on a small organization board that will find in a larger organization board? Yes and no. Sometimes you may have a larger organization may have more corporate people that have connections to larger, mainstream corporations. Then you may have some people that have more connections to private foundations community board sent have a lot more community leaders, people who are connected politically, people who have businesses in the area on dh. Then, of course, you do have people that live in the area that may work for a corporation in a, you know, another capacity. And you also may have some folks that are government based. Okay, so you’ll have that local commitment, as lisa was describing, right? You have a little bit more local commitment. You’re your group may live in the area where your organization is, where a larger organization your your trustees may live elsewhere, right? So so so why don’t we stay with that, terry? What? How can we leverage that? That local nature of the board? Well, you’re trying to first off people become members of your board because they’re interested in what you do, and they want to help it serve your community, the community that they live in. So the urge to be part of something bigger than they are is one of the things that you want to work on. And so then you just need to work and find out what their capacities are, who their contacts are and see whether where their strengths are, too. Have them help you. Okay, twenty let’s start with sort of the chronology of board members life cycle, uh, recruitment. What? What are the challenges and that a small organization faces in recruiting successful boardmember we liked it really? Just talk from how we do it in my organization, but we typically try to identify specific areas of need that we have on our board and some of the gaps of skillsets connections, how people are connected on and we try teo, identify people who can fill those gaps on the board. Sure, and typically, the way we recruit them is through personal relationships. Typically somebody on our board might know of somebody or i might have met somebody, or in some cases, people have even approached us with an interest in the work that we d’oh. And now, since you are a local organization, you’re drawing from a smaller pool of potential talent. That’s correct, but you have the advantage of it being local and again, the commitment that at least talked about that’s. Correct? Okay, okay. Back-up lisa, special challenges of other special challenges around recruitment of boards for small charities that we should talk about. Well, i think one of the things we talked about in our workshop earlier, wass the wendy spoke to it. Well, that sort of a lining, the at a small local level. You may you want to make sure you know really what you want their role to be because they really is a commitment level. And interest level that is often not there. In the larger organizations. People may actually want to do tacit work for you. They may want to make real connections in real time for you, it’s, really not a so, you know, they’re not doing it for source social reasons. So i think, a lining that, you know, the individual in what they want to contribute, and then what the organization needs is even more interesting with smaller organizations. Because there’s more opportunity, i think, to really work with the boards one on one with real goals, that they want it, you know, complete with you, because you’re a small organization, you can actually do that. The goal isn’t a, you know, twenty five million dollars capital campaign, it’s a. You know of of two hundred fifty thousand dollars scholarship campaign, where numbers that become more achievable. But her her one of the point that she made was that very wealthy people shouldn’t be ignored by small organizations. Potential boardmember because it could be bigger. They could be bigger players on a smaller board, of course. Plus you want their expertise, but they could be very interested in a small charity. Good when we actually have a few board members who have been on major major boards, like in new york city. Um who i think have a more gratifying experience. Kind of working on the more local level, rolling up their sleeves, having a direct impact on a cause rather than sitting on a fancy board and going tio three or four meetings a year and about feeling expected to write a check and doing nothing. So i think, that’s, that that’s really the just the distinction, right? Same thing here. My organization has a wide variety of folks in both wealthy and not so wealthy. But people who were really involved and and the smaller organization that’s that’s the reason why they become a member of the of the of the board is to get involved because they have a passion. So, terry, since fund-raising is so important for board members, how do we set the appropriate level of e-giving four boards at small organizations what’s your place there? Some places just give one level of giving for everyone saying, okay, everyone needs to give five thousand dollars or three thousand dollars or ten thousand dollars or whatever it is, but it has to relate to the size of the board’s budget. So for example, my organization does not have a specific geever get, but we expect everyone to participate in the annual fund everyone to give to the gala in some way, shape or form and everyone to give an additional gift of some sort. So you may have some folks that can give twenty five thousand dollars to the gala and then ten thousand to the annual fund and then an additional gift from their private foundation and then other people will, through their company or through there, and a combination of company and the personal money. Give five thousand to the gala, you know, one thousand to the annual fund and, you know, some other money, so it has to be a willingness to accept so it’s a willingness to accept what they khun dio right? Because it’s their capacity so it’s about having a conversation with the boardmember when they’re coming on to understand, to have them understand that there is a responsibility to see support the organization, and then to talk about what level that they’re comfortable giving it. So is that how you assess their capacity? And you’re just really you need to have a conversation what they’re comfortable with, right? Well, i mean, you’ve done the research, you’ve done the research before you brought him in as a trustee to kind of know what they’re pass it e issue done the the prospect research to say, ok, well, this person, you know, has given here there and what have you so you kind of have an idea of what they’re financial level is so then it’s a matter of having a careful conversation with them too say, you know, what is it that you feel comfortable with? And it is, of course. It’s important to set those expectations at the recruitment stage, right. Exactly together. Normally written down. I mean, this is not it’s not uncommon to have written documents that say your contribution will be two hundred fifty dollars. You know that that’s? Not an uncommon. Okay, where you’ll be expected to go to an event or you’ll be expected to cultivate whatever. It’s not uncommon to have those things even written down. It’s. Not like these air secret or uncomfortable conversations. You know, they’re just that’s just part of the business relationship. Most bored people understand they will be a set of contributions they have to make some of which include financial time. Whatever would you would you go so far as to recommend that they be a document that the boardmember signs? Yes. In most cases, there is a is a a a a board agreement. Okay, because liability means you normal. Ok, wendy, partners in education, we don’t have a written agreement, but we haven’t explicit verbal commitment that in most cases has been honored without a problem. Okay, it is not in a contract. All right. How about communications with with a small organization board is that? Is it any i’m guessing easier because most of the people are local? Terry, go ahead. Well, we my ceo communicates with the board on a regular basis. Individually, we have meetings every month, so every other, every was every other know every other month is an executive board meeting. And every other month on the other side is our full board meeting. And then we do not have a board meeting in august. So there’s that then there’s also committee. So we have committees, there’s, a finance committee and development committee, a program committee and nomine nominating committee. And so they usually meet every other month or every two months, three months or something like that. And then we all like i communicate with staff with the board members that i’m working with for a specific project or the, you know, different staff would work directly with the boardmember so it’s, more informal words again, a larger organization with larger, more high level board members, you may not have as much communication access access to them and communication through all your staff with them. It may just be a point to point from your ceo to the board or maybe your ceo, your cfo and your development person, the only people that talk to your board when they were going to say something on communicating for us. I’ve really have kind of individual relationships that the board members. And for the most part, i’d say seventy five percent of them. I have. I’m in communication with on a very regular basis, and you’re the executive director. S, right. Ok, which is, i guess. They’re more accessible to the charity. Also, the board members make themselves more accessible than a larger organization might find. Well, i find ways email, and i mean, i think communication is really easy, you know, whether wherever you live, you could just shoot and email and get a response, but because the board’s pretty active everybody’s working on something so there’s always i mean, it’s not the communication is not for the purpose. So much of updating as it is to kind of do the work, and we work together as you know, collaboratively on you, no specific issues and projects that puts me into direct communication with the board members on a fairly regular basis. So what about switching topics? Labbate hyre assessing the capacity of your board in different capability, different areas, maybe it’s fund-raising maybe it’s love assessing whether you have gaps in expertise? What what’s important? I think, wendy, we’ve all talked about nominating committee’s and what we do, we’re in all the organizations i’ve worked for is the nominating committee is one of the most important committees on any board or the nominating people, and we we do it very almost like database oriented. You know, here the five or six strands of talent that we need, you know, social talent, business, talent, political talent, you know what, marketing, whatever it is, you know, here’s the slots where that is filled now, here’s, what? We’re going to have gaps, we spend a lot of time looking at the term limits, and when people are coming up for renewal too, you know, because gaps will then because you really want to call today, you know, minimally, a year in advance, you want to start your cultivation efforts because you make no assumptions and and also things come up for people, you know, they were interested last year, but this year someone is ill in their family, they’ve gotten a promotion, they’re moving, etcetera, so the nominating committee is very important and to be very strategic about on the goals. I mean, you could have a goal that you have celebrities that’s fine, but, you know, you have to just make sure it’s all you’ve gotten what’s it called a pipeline, you know? So you’re constantly putting names into that pipeline, and your board is very active in that process. Well, they are on their on the nominee they are, the nominating committee rarely includes people from staff in anything other than, like a, you know, did that’s really very much the work of a board there also engaging the full board. Oh, christ, as they identify needs. Oh, you know that it’s talked about usually nominating and issues of bored recruitment are are usually part of certain board meetings. You know, it’ll come up as an agenda item and then there’s the nominating committee, which has, like, you were saying this most of the time, i talked to our board members when i was at pelham art center because they were working board. Wendy so a lot of the communication had to do a task oriented project management, things you were doing together, military. Anything you want to know about assessing the capacity of the board. Okay, what about board training? Any any differences in when a new boardmember comes on any differences that you’ve identified you, emmanuelle for smaller organizations that okay, please go ahead. We have aboard manual that we’ve been evolving our organization’s not quite five years old yet sweeping, evolving that and new board members that come on, get an orientation. They are given emmanuel. And each year we, you know, have ah, two three hour orientation for our new members and that’s how we train them. And there is no big formal training program but it’s more of an orientation to the organization. Ok? And most of them have been to something that we, you know, most of them know us and not where they joined the board. Someone in the other workshop had an interesting idea. She spoke about on their board. They actually had, like, a, you know, in high school or college, the key club where you came in new and someone was aligned to you. They had a senior boardmember each new boardmember that came on, there was a relationship. They were the mentor to that new boardmember i thought that was a really good idea. I thought that was a great idea. What we do is we have a retreat every year once a year. It’s ah, saturday afternoon. And so we are doing both role playing or discussions talking about topics that are of interest, reviewing our strategic plan. So last year at our board retreat, we went through some role playing in how tio make an ask good. Okay, excellent. That kind of leads me to something interesting. I think i hope hyre what about board members who aren’t comfortable asking directly, but maybe can be engaged in other activities around fund-raising why did you continue, terry? Well, some people are very they they feel uncomfortable asking their friends, their family or going to to even business colleagues to set up a meeting for something. Um, and so you need to find different ways for them to to support whether they can host a party of their friends at their home. We’ve done that. Where then you have your museum staff and their friends. They’re so the museum staff could do the cultivation because we’re that’s what we do. S o or you can have them come with you on a site, is it with a funder or a lunch? And they just need to be the intro person and the ask and the program description and all of that comes from the staff people, so they are observing their participating in some way, but they’re also they’re shadowing. They’re learning through it by going through this, you know, site visit or you? Know, observing the ask at a cocktail party or what have you do you find that they become the ones who are reluctant in the beginning? Tio actually ask become more comfortable. Have you seen that? Well, a little bit, yeah, i mean that’s the goal and sometimes it may take a little longer depends on everyone’s personalities different and some people are more comfortable in the limelight and others are not. So you have to kind of work with what they’re willing to do, what their comfort level is and you can’t force someone into something that i want dio that will be a disaster. Forget wendy’s. I don’t think i think something terry set is is really key, and that is, you know, in addition to asking people for money equally is important is is just opening up doors, making introductions and that’s i mean, even for people that don’t like to ask for money making introductions is really important because, you know, particularly if you really believe in the mission of the organization, the organization khun sell itself that’s themselves, that pipeline that lisa mention constantly introducing new people. I know we have a boardmember and you know, one of things i like to do is just kind of focus when i have my board members do. And we have one boardmember who has some really key foundation contacts and his what i asked him to do every years you get me into two foundations and that’s it that’s it that’s your job and that’s huge. That could be hundreds of thousands of dollars. So anything you want and what i do think that friendraising and fund-raising are all part of that same resource development. And as long as you can make sure there’s enough prongs and what you think of resource development there’s no, boardmember that can’t help you if we have to leave it there, ladies. My block this week is charity corporatization re ducks three i’ve blocked this before, as you can tell from the title, and i’m still concerned about blurring lines between charities and corporations. More cities, for instance, are collecting what they call pilots payments in lieu of taxes from charities or they’re considering getting these payments from charities pittsburgh in memphis for most recently and there’s in my block there’s a link to a chronicle of philanthropy article talks about pittsburgh and memphis and a number of other cities that are either collecting those or looking at it. Also, we have corporations starting to look like charity’s, taking some in some of those charity attributes there’s the b corp in california. That’s ah, a form of organisation be corp. For an organization that gives some public benefit as well as having a profit motive. And in a lot of states there are low profit, limited liability corporations also called l three c’s on dh does i put this together with some other data points and just concerns me that the charity start to look like corporations and start getting treated like corporations in terms of those taxes. Very well, good to have you back. Thank you. We’re talking today about c r m constituent relationship management. Why is this important? Well, you know, it’s very important for non-profits to track relationships that they have especially fund-raising purposes, in my opinion, you know, i’m talking more about fund-raising side there as a prospect researcher that you want to be able to see, you know, where our people interconnected you want to be ableto have a certain data point certainly noted in a system that’s going to be able to capture the relevant points of information that are important for your organization and a broader cr m really goes beyond even the donor database. It would be able to track relationships that you have with volunteers with perhaps people that are coming in, uh, to use your organization’s services on a daily basis so it can give you a really broad picture. And, you know, i any any time you can have any type of a tool that shows sort of relationship management for a mapping tool, you know, i’m all for that, okay? And you and i have talked about too, that prospects don’t only come from donors and fund-raising quote fund-raising prospects. But could be employees or vendor’s vendors to the organization or consultants. Right? Right, right. So these are all the types of relationships that you can manage in a system, you know, ideally, you know, a picture scenario where you are a ah non-profit executive at a small commit sides non-profit and you get a phone call and somebody says, you know, hi, this is, you know, tony martignetti i’m looking to talk to you a little bit more and expand on our last conversation. If it’s me calling, you probably should hang up, but it’s using some other example? Yes. You know, you would want to be able to instantly trying to recall well, gee, what? Tony and i last talk about what were the talking points? You know what? What was his area of interest? Right? So ideally, if you’re, you know, at your computer, will you be able to just, you know, put tony’s name in there and pull up some sort of a data sheet on tony said that you’d be able to track what what were our last conversations? And, of course, you know, this is really important. There’s a lot of turnover right at non-profits so, you know, you want to be able to have that that that long term relationship tracked a donor doesn’t care, right? They don’t care that there’s while they developed relationships with key personnel at the non-profit but in terms of the overall longevity and their commitment to that non-profit organization, whomever that executive director development director is, um, he’s probably not as important as the overarching mission and trying to make sure that that there’s that continuity that people will continue to understand what that donor’s intent is what donors specific interest are. Yeah, it becomes quite embarrassing to say, you know, someone who’s new in the position, you know? I don’t i don’t really know what what conversations were before me, you know, it all just needs to be documented. You’re right for the institutional knowledge and continuity, yeah, absolutely, really critical and donorsearch budget organizations are really just using some sort of a spreadsheet right now to manage this, you know, there are systems out there that are fabulous, and they really range in price. Do you want me to talk about a particular guide that can that can help them kind of identify this. And i can actually put some information on on your paige is well about it. Yeah, in just a moment. Let me just get to one of the survey questions that we had about what? What systems people are using now to manage constituent data. Fifty percent of using razor’s edge. And about seventeen percent are using donor perfect and about a third of using other other software systems. But nobody said one of the choices was it’s on paper or in our heads. And so, thankfully, nobody nobody said that. And nobody said excel spreadsheets. Good thing. So all right, so people are past the index cards, at least. Listeners. Well, this is sophisticated audience, so you’re not going to get your average executive director ceo fundraiser listening to this is a sophisticated show, so the sample is skewed. So we’ll presume that there are some who would say it’s on paper in our heads, but they’re not our listeners. They could be were welcomed them, because then after today’s show, they could choose a different answer. Find value. This’s a that’s. Right? Of course. S oh, please. Why don’t you, uh you have an idea if we had just a couple minutes before break, you have ah, a place where people can sort of compare software, is that what you have? Yeah, absolutely. June twenty eleven idealware dot org’s, uh, terrific website for all types of things having to do with technologies for non-profits they came out with a free downloadable guide that’s called the consumer’s guide to low cost donor-centric and they reviewed lots of systems, and then they go into in depth and review sort of their top ten systems and across all kinds of different, uh, data points, you know, they’re reviewing them, of course, for price. And by the way, all assistance they reviewed technically felling under the four thousand dollars range. Okay, so these are not going to be like razors edge is not going to included, right? Razor’s edge is a very high entry cost. Yeah, so i thought, well, with, you know, your your listener audience of the smaller to midsize non-profit that some of their recommendations might actually fit very well for the non-profits they’re looking at, you know, how well can you manage the donor information? The reporting, tracking events, some of the systems khun do that? Well, yeah, because event event attendees that’s another constituency, right? That’s, right? They might attend an event, but they’re not. They’re not donors in the strict out of pocket sense without any other, any participation. So event attendees another important constituency that’s, right? And they are also some of the systems will do male merging very well. Others are not as great at it. Email. How well can the system email out or play? Well with an outside system, for example, i know that there are certain databases that played very well with donorsearch software, like tapestry in constant contact or constant contact in sales force. Dot com they are two systems that integrate very well together. So integration actually is another data point that they looked at. So, you know, i recommend everybody take a look at that particular guide because it’s free it’s downloadable um and idealware is actually having ah, replay on their webinar that they have on that particular topic as well. And i happen to have received an email. Just tweak that they’re having a sale on their recorded webinars. So for this month, only august it appears that they are nine dollars to download the past recorded webinar. Okay, but and the the survey sounds like sort of a consumer reports of of c r e m now does idealware this is important to know his idealware create today of their own software package or now that they’re not in that business there just a value. That’s what prompted me to kind of take a look at their whole cr m area? There’s there’s a very new, interesting software out there. And it’s called unify o you and i f y o dot com. And by the way, it works best on google chrome. So i know that was one of the questions that i made sure that we are listeners answering on since you’re right, but since you just mentioned it, let sze get that question out. It was which internet browser or using it work fifty percent explorer. Fifty percent are chrome, and then a handful of people, i guess, have to and the about a third of those said fire fox so a third of the yeah, about a third of the half what the hell am i talking? About? Fifty percent said explorer, fifty percent said chrome and about seventeen percent said firefox. So obviously summer using multiple systems. That’s what i was trying to convey in the past minute and a half. Okay, so way. Just have a minute before break. So say a little bit more and then we’ll come back. Okay? Sure. So what it is is a technically they call it a browser extension, and if you go to their website, they have a really cool little video. And i can post, uh, on your page is, well, a link to a specific video that talks about how confused for prospect research and that’s what really caught my attention, but basically what they say is that it bridges the gap between you and your c r m so and we’ll give you a little bit more information on that. But it really completes your customer profiles toe all of your cloud applications, so it integrates with several systems already sales force dot com high rise, which is another cr m system that i’m actually not as familiar with, um, and so, since sales force dotcom does have a non-profit maria, we have to take a break hold. Yeah, i believe it is so what’s kind of cool about it is, you know, it had caught my attention was the fact that if i’m assuming now that the sales force dot com tool that non-profits air using would indeed integrate with unify oh, so if we’ve got any sales forthe users out there, i’d love some feedback. You know, through my page or tony’s page to see if it’s working well for you, but basically once you load this unify o icon up into your tool bar so let’s say then you are looking at somebody’s profile in sales force dot com you can click on the little unify. Oh, uh, icon and it will show you other other interactions that have happened with that person, so if that person has been tweeting about your organization or any email communications that have happened, you can manually put in specific notes about a person, so i’m thinking for a really small to midsize non-profit this could be a very interesting solution. Now, this is brand new. Tony okay, yeah, this is brand new, this is you launched may twenty twelve um, i had an opportunity to skype twice with the ceo of this company in recent weeks so i could get a better handle on understanding it and they love feedback. So, maria, it sze pulling in the whole web when you when you identify somebody that you’re you’re interested in? Yeah, well, it integrates best with certain platforms, but yeah, i mean, if you’re browsing and google chrome, so i was right, it has to be it only works in google chrome so far right far only google chrome, but they are looking to develop it for the other platforms as well. And, you know, i just think, it’s something really need to take a look at if if any of our listeners have an opportunity to do so and provide some feedback, they hadn’t created this. For the not non-profit sector originally, so to know that there could be this applique ability because you can have teams of people so let’s say you’ve got the executive director, the development director, maybe a program director and maybe a couple of board members be considered a team. All this data can be shared. So if you and i are on a team, tony and i want to try and figure out what? When were the last communications, it would pull an information about your last email communications okay, and are you testing this unify? Oh, maria, you know, i’ve been playing around with it a little bit, but i don’t have sales force dot com loaded here so that’s, why? I’d love to know somebody who does have it to see how that how, how that could integrate but it pulled in lengthen dad a twitter feed and i think it’s gonna have a lot of applicability it’s free right now, and it won’t stay free forever, so there will be a fee attached to this at some point. But i’ve been told by the ceo they’re going to keep it very affordable for the nonprofit sector. More broadly, when you’re looking at your your cr m software it’s important to know what, what your goals are from your from your system. Yeah, yeah, absolutely, you know, is it’s a system that is only going to be turning out donorsearch ports is this system, as i mentioned earlier, that might have to do mail merges and email marketing? Um, is this a system that is going to be able to help you track, um, interactions, right with those air critical for prospect freak prospect research? Oh, absolutely, absolutely. I mean, you think about all the points on the continuum on the development cycle. So you’ve got the prospect identification and research think about how will it play into cultivation? Solicitation the thank you, the follow-up and the stewardship i c c r m being invaluable not only for me, it’s, a prospect researcher, but certainly in stewarding donor forward. So it should have really flexibility to be able to provide additional notes. I love cloud based systems personally and don’t put me in george in jail. Now, i think the audience knows club. I think scott and i have talked about cloudgood other other other guests have, okay? I think people should know the cloud by now, i’m clear to talk. Wait, we just have about a minute and a half, though. Okay? So any cloud based system, for example, will enable any board members that you give access to the system, say they are very active and cultivating and solicited, soliciting people and meeting with people outside the office. Then they can certainly go ahead and type in notes about those particular meetings. And that again for that continuity is very, very important. Maria simple is the prospect finder. My concern about charities being too much like corporations. And now here we are talking about with marie about salesforce, dot com and unify. Oh, a system that wasn’t developed for charities was developed for companies. I do think there are good practices, great practices. In the in the for-profit corporation sector that charity’s can learn from and vice versa. I think corporations could soften themselves in some ways and learn a lot from charities. It’s the it’s, the so learning from each other, that’s to me, that’s distinct from starting to, um b organized by be regulated by by the other by state and federal overseers as one that you’re really not as as as b corp to start to look like r l three sees the limit for-profit limited liability corporations, i think start toe look at so that’s the start to look like charities that’s the distinction for me between what maria and i were talking about when i blogged about this week my thanks, tio terry, billy, wendy nadella, lisa, rob, of course, and the organizer’s of fund-raising day twenty twelve as well as maria next week grow your grassroots.
